The great iron bridge now being constructed over the Mississippi at Hannibal, Missouri, is one of the great works of the present day. The length between the abutments is 1580 feet. It will be eighteen feet wide in the clear, and is intended for both railway and highway travel. With tlio exception of the piers and flooring, thdi bridge will be of wrought-iron throughout. The amount of material to be used is something enormous; lineal feet of piling, 1,000,000 feet of timber aud flooring, 10,000 tons of masonry, 10,000 tons rip-rap, 4000 tons of concrete, and 1350 tons of iron.

The structure is to be ready by the first of August, and will cost about $500,000. OFFICE OF THE DAILY REPUBLICAN,) YVepjksdav Moknino, 15, 1871. 1 kathkk, Bi sinkss, iie weather vrstenlii.v w.i- cold in tilt- murniiip: and mild and hazy in tin' afternoon. It was rather a disagreeable day, b(it aceordancc with the general fitness of this climate. What to-day will hriug forth in the shape ol'weather we eafi not even surmise. Business was brisker yesterday than at any other tune during this season.

Tlie of course is the life of present being enacted in the Red river trade, caused aji unusual activity among the receiving packets for that stream, and the harf at the landing of the Red River Packet Company's steamer was a scene of much confusion and disorderly conduct among the teamsters, who were all striving to deliver their loads totlie receiving elerk at one time. We suppose that liadit not been tor the assistance of some of our eflioient harhur police there would have been several "rows between the infuriated draymen aud drivers of floats. At the landing of the Belle of Alton there was another animated scene. All this furious rush ami sudden display ol bust ness by our Red river shippers was caused by the -h reduction of which will take place on the entrance of the Belle of Alton in the Red trade to Shreveport, and the rise of water in that stream. The Texas, for Jefferson and Shreveport was ooninlotttly and fully liideu with freight.

undhad a flue list. The Belle of Alton as also tilled out with passengers and freight. Outside ol the Red river activity, however, other packets did a tine business. The H. S.

Turner received a good trip for Louisville; Marcella had a fine cargo: the Robert E. Lee went out with one of the lu st trips of flic season, she having taken the Wade Hampton's trip besides her own; the Belle Yazoo and Lizzie Hopkins were also pretty well filled with people and freight; the Bannock City, lor upper coast, aud Hamilton, for above the Red river raft, had lair cargoes. arrivals were not very numerous, and a detailed list of them will found in our river column. Rates to Red river down low. and in the other trades firm, high and unchanged.

The river here continues to swell, and the Red liver is also rising. Our regular river dispatches will give partieulars as to the condition of the upper streams. They will be found full ou the first MiscKLLANKors aptain John Kouns. of the Canal Street Ferry Company, has changed the wooden walk leading to his ferry to about thiity feet up tlie liver. By this he levee room to the accommodation of about 500 bales of COttou.

Kveil this is a benefit. Captain Robert K. Riley, the distinguished com maurlcr of the Colossal, says his packet is now "(). and will soon weud her peaceful wav up romantic Arkansas river. Captain Riley is aCtdoSaul commander, and always wends when he says so.

The Wade whieli left this port Fort Adamson Monday evening, broke some portion of her luueliitiery. and cauie back to this port for repairs. Captain Libano will soon have her in good trim again. The belU- ot Alton, just before she departed hast evening, was unfortunate enough to lose a large portable engine overboard while having it transits red from the wharf to her deck. We suppose the engine will be recovered in a damaged condition.

It was valued at eighteen hundred we understand. A bell-boat will attempt to raise it to-day. Captain John T.
