Not willing to be left; still by ray side Haunting my walks; while summer-day was dying; Nor leaving in thy turn: but pleased to glide Through the dark room wliere I was sadly lying, Or by the couch of pain, a sitter meek, Watch the dim eye, and kiss the feverish cheek.

Oh! bov, of such a3 thou are oftenest made Earth's fragile idols; like a tender No strength in all thy freshness; prone to fade; And bending weakly to the thunder-shower; Still, round loved, thy heart found force to bind, And clung, like woodbine shaken in the wind! Then thou, my merry in thy glee, Under the bough, or by the firelight dancing, With thy sweet temper and thy spirit free, Didst come, as restless as a bird's wiug gianecing, Full of a wild and mirth, Like a young sunbeam to tlie gladdened earth! Thine was the shout, the song, the burst of joy! Which sweet from childhood's rosy lip resoundeth; Thine was the eager spirit naught could cloy, And the glad heart from which, all grief reboundeth; And many a mirthful jest gnd mock reply; Lurk'd in the laughter of thy dark: blue eye! And thine was many an art to win and bless, The celd and stern to joy and fondness warming; The coaxing smile; the frequent caress; The earnest, tearful prayer all wra.th disarming! Again my heart a new affection found, But thought that love with thee had reach'd its bound. At length thou earnest; thou, the last and last; Nicknamed 'the Emperor' by thy laughing brothers, Because a haughty spirit swelled thy bruast. And thou didst seek te rule and sway the others; Mingling with every playful infant wile A iminic majesty that made us smile. And oh! most like a regal child wert thou! An ey of resolute and successful scheming; Fair shoulders, curling lip, and dauntless brow, Fit for the world's strite, not for pdel's dreaming: And proud the lifting of thy stately head, And the firm bearing of thy conscious tread. Different from both.

Yet each succeeding claim, that all other love had been forswearing, Forthwith admitted; equal and the same; Nor injured either by this love comparing; Nor stole a fraction for the newer call, But in the mother's heart found room for all! ELECTRICITY TN of experiments made with steam at the depot of the Lowell Rail Road, are given in the Boston Daily Advertiser. "The expansion of steam has just become an interesting souree of electricity. The similar to those just made in England, wore performed at the depot of the Lowell Rail Road on the locomotives Boston and Nashua, in company with Mr. Daniel Davis who made the simple apparatus which was necessary. This consists of a brass rod four feet long, with a brush'of points projecting from one end to collect the electricity, and a glass insulating handle two feet long at the rest of the apparatus was such as is commonly used.

The pressure OR both locomotives was sixty pounds to the inch. The Boston was in ari engine house, the dampness of which interfer-'d with the insulation oi (he instruments. Oo immersing the pointed end of the rod in the cloud of steam escaping from the safety valve, the lower end gave oJ a little electricityto pith balls and aLeyden jar. The Nashua was standing out in the san. Or.

putting the rati as h'-fore in the steam escaping! Irom the safely valve, sporks two inches long were immediately drawn irom it, and taken at the distance ol'half an inch, they were 100 numerous to be counted. They passed readily over the intervals in the tin foil of a "spotted" glass strip. A large Leyden jar was charged at discretion and chocks administered. Ether was inflamed by the of the jar. Owing to the snow the insulting stool answered imperfectly, the person standing upon it and taking electricity from tho rod, giving off short sparks of some intensity- The electricity tsted by pith balls and a bit of shellac, was positive.

the pointed end of the rod was held in the steam at different distances from the valve, the electricity was comparatively feeble at six inches distance, increasing gradually till the rd was four or five feet and the sparks diminishing again at still greater distances. The electricity seems therefore developed by the expansion of the steam-on escaping from the boiler. Otherwise much more would be obtained near the valve tliau at a dfrtancc from it. Sparks could be drawn from the cod when it was a foot or two, entirely without the steam. More striking results woule doubtless be obtained in a drier air and with a rod.

The most singular thing observed was a difference between tlie shock and spark thus produced and those of common electricity. The sensatian was more like the galvanic shock, perhaps from the electricity being given oft from a latent more probably from a large quantity being present at a low intensity Irom tlie want of insulation in the most air. The was positively electrifie 1, tlie engine doubtless negatively, which became evident by putting one hand on the engine and taking a spark with the other, when a slight shock was felt in both hands. These phenomena are no less important to the theory of electaioity than they are curious. They may explain, among other things, the electrical excitements of tlie atmosphere and clouds.

The fruits of the earth do not more obviously require labor and cultivation to prepare them for our use and subsidence, than our faculties demand instruction and regulation, in order to qualify us to become upright and valuable members "society, useful to othsrs, or, valuable to our solves. VOL. ER.ECTRrCITY OF THE JHU.VLA.Y BODY. Professor Locke, oi the Ohio Met I IL College, continues to publish the results liis experiments in electricity. Our rear! re vviil remember that we gave, a few RIAL'S sine his account ot experiments made with s'eani.

Another le 'er has appeared in the Cincinnati Gazette which we give: LEAR During my investigations of "Electricity in Steam," 1 found it necessary to have an electroscope of unusual delicacy. therefore, made ar: improvement in the gold leaf electrometer of Bennct, by whit under any condition of the atmosphere, it in dry air point of importance in a bio climate. My design being well executed by Mr. Foster, of the lirm of Wells Foster, I lound the instrument to POSSESS surpassing delicacy. The old electrician? mention that electricity is often indicated by the human bedy 1 had received their statement doufitingly; but as this electroscope stood upon the taule, and the insulating stocl ULE me, I was tempted to make the experiment.

i did so, and to my surprise, on placing UR K-ND upon the cap of the electrometer, the leaves On repeating the experiment seve. 1 found, occasionally, the electrici.Y so "great that the divergence was near two inch and the leaves actually touched the contiguous conductor, thus discharging themselves bf communicating their electricity in a small spark. I have made this a subject of research, and shall be able in a day or two to communicate 1 the results. You.s, JOHN LOCKE. Medical College of Ohio, Dec.

Gaines and his accomplished lady will dis- course on war, national defence, at the. Musical fund Halt, and all the beauty and fashion of this peerless city are to be present, to learn military tactics. The General is popular immensely popular. We doubt if the capacious piece of meeting will contain half the applicants for seats, but it is the largest hall in town, and those who cannot gain admittance must remain without the doors. The General is sixty four years and he carries himself as erectly and with as tirm a step as most inen of twenty-five.

He is up in the morning early, and the good people in the upper part of Chesnut street may generally see" him on Lis return way from a of five or six miles, if they will look out of their windows while dressing lor breakfast. He is the greatest pedestrian in town. The lady is over understand she is thirty-two years old, but she looks much younger. Sh? is very beautiful; her eye resembles that of the ci devant Fanny Keinble, but is up, no military ardor We expressed yesterday some doubt in relation to certain little domesticatities. We were wrong; the General has an heir, about the same age as Prince Albert's; and be is -perfect pattern of a domestic In regard to the lectures, we said above that every body is going to the Musical Fund Hall on Thursday evening, and we add, that no one will regret having done so.

General Gaines is a man of the finest abilities, forensic as. well as military, and his system of national defei deserving of the gravest attention of ell good citizens. The -horrors of wag' have never been so truthfully or so vividly depicted by soldier's wile. Pnila. Standard.
