Native Dancer Will Have To Contend With Another Horse-And Eddie Arcaro Sy IM Pm, DES MOINES You can't beat the sun rain-drenched Drake Relays, fans will tell you and they'll add you can't beat Georgetown or Illinois either. Georgetown, running with vengeance, turned in smashing victories over its chief conqueror of last year, the University of Kansas, in the four-mile and distance relays.

Illinois' two-day effort Included vlctorlea in three university relays and three Individual events. It added three second places and a pair of thirds placing In 11 events. The Hoyas came a long way to do one Kansas. Georgetown did just that. On Friday they left Kansas 200 yards back at the finish of the four mile relay, and in the distance medley Saturday Charlie Capozzoli had a 140-yard lead on Kansas' Wes Santee at the end.

Despite a soggy track, Georgetown did the four miles in 17:20.8, a mark beaten only twice in Drake annals. The Illinois' team perfor. mnnce certainly must be listed with the greateiit seen here. Tliey came through with victories in the 480-yard shuttle hurdle, two-mile and 440-yard relays and the 120-yard high hurdles, 100-yard dash and two- mile run. Joe McNulty, a versatile hurdler-sprinter, won the high hurdles and ran on the winning shuttle hurdle and 440-yard relay teams.

He also ran a leg pn the second-place half-mile outfit. His amazing running earned him "the most outstanding" award along with Darrow Hooper, the only record breaker. Hooper of Texas A a second place finisher in the 1952 Olympics shot put, looped the ball 55 feet, 4 inches to smash a 19 year old rake mark. Elliott 24 Hits Short of 2,000 ty Aiioclated PrMt ST. Mr.

Millard, who has been sports editor of the Decatur Herald-Review for more years than we can recollect assures us that the Decatur Commies are also expecttog to walk off with top honors 1953. Millard, who was president of the Illinois State League in 194748, has recently returned from Del Rio, Texas where he spent two weeks covering sprtog trato- ing activities of the DecattU' club "We had some beautiful weather to work in," confides Howard, "and the team comes north to Decatur ready for action Millard remarked that in past years he had covered spring training of Decatur teams in Kentucky, Missouri, Georgia, Alabama and he has never seen better weather conditions for a ball club than prevailed this year in Del Rio "I understand they have had just 3 inches of rain In the past five years at Del Rio," Millard said, "and I can easily believe it age, same age as Joe Schmidt of the Kings, and both piay second base And both hit about .360 last with Keokuk, Iowa, and Taylor with Chickasha, Okla. in the Sooner State League. While Decatur was apparently ready to play ball the Ktogs were still short a catcher Frank Marmino, of Jennings, had not made his ance at Vets Park Marmtoo was in touch with the Kings by telephone over the weekend- but our guess Is that he won't play ball here in 1953. Meanwhile, prexy Faulkner was in conference today with veteran receiver Nick Starasta of Royalton.

The Kings have a secondUne receiver in young Ken Eubanka, of Benton, a veritable giant of a lad, but manager Schmidt wants an "old-head" behind the plate when the Season opens. Pete Erickson, a catcher who opened the season with Denver, Colo, of the Class A Western League, was available to the Kings on the weekend but the deal fell through when Schmidt could make no assurance that Erickson would get to play regularly with Mt. Millard was in Mt. Vernon today getting a line on the Kings' prospects "I had heard that Mt. Vernon was going to start with an experienced club and we rather looked for the Kings to give us a tough battle for the pennant," Howard said.
