Tlmmonds had written the letter that was published In last -Sunday's Courier-Journal calling for police protection when the company reached JeffersonvlUe assigning as provocation that there was an element In th company composed of the "scum of th earth" that proposed to "make tt unpleas ant for commissioned and noncommissioned officers." Acting upon this presumption. Tlmmonds. -who was Quarter master sergeant, has been reduced in rank.

The letter provoked indignation among the officers and telegrams were sent denying the existence of disaffection. From time to time reports have reached Jeffer- sonvllle that certain men In Company were making threats to "get even" after Deing mustered out. The JerTersoovllle Lodge of Elks met last evening and completed arrangements for participating in the reception and parade. JUMPED INTO THE CISTERN. Bernard Freund Succeeds In Drown ing and Mrs.

William James Is Unsuccessful. Demented and a victim of melancholia. Bernard Freund ended his life at 8:30 o'clock yesterday morning by Jumping into a cistern at his home on the Charlestown pike, ono mile from Jf fTersonvllle. His wife had gon to a grocery, and when she returned the dead body was Jack Pbipps. James Coward John Orohr recovered.

It. Mr. Freund wa a native of Germany, aged seventy-three years. He was a gar dener, ant had lived In Claysburg for ty years. Two years ago he was Injured In a rail way accident, and his health since had been bad.

Air. Freund was at one time a Catholic. He belonged to Tell Lodge. I. o.

o. Relatives in Jeffersonville received word yesterday that Mr. William James had attempted to drown herself In a cistern, near Scottsburg. Ind. She had be-n de spondent.
