Charles Delmonioo remains practically where It was yesterday morning. The only prog ress made is in the line of exploding erroneous theories and disposing of worthless dews. Early this forenoon several professional dredgers hired In Newark entered the Peddle street and Pennsylvania avenue sewers through the main outlet at the foot of the former street They had with thssa tan. terns, ropes, and staves shod with troa hooks. All the man -holes along the Una were opened to ventilate the tunnel The men remained at work oyer an hour; only leaving tbe sewer when compelled to do so by the rising tide, They reported that not only waa there no body In the channel bnt taey had found no.

object which might have ever belonged to Mr. Delmonlo or which could throw any light on the mystery. The search In the sewer was continued for half an hour more with grappllng-hooks and poles used through the man-holes, and it was only abandoned altogether when absolute oertalnty was reached that the missing gentleman's corpse was not in the sewer. AKOTHKB FALSE KEPOBT. The excitement over Mr.

Delmoulco's flight reached its height this afternoon in the pro-fonndest sorrow caused by tbe unfounded rumor that his body bad been found in the Hackensack River. At the' time when this cruel falsehood was sent to the city by some Irresponsible person, there was no time to prove or disprove it before the issue of the last editions of the evening paers, and It was consequently printed as a rumor. Unhappily, the publication of thrf story led to countless repetitions of it, and before the down town otnees were closed and In the latter part of the afternoon the entire city was misinformed In the matter. It was stated tonight that a new clew had been discovered, pointing In ths direction of Philadelphia, and a detective was sent to Jersey City to inquire regarding it, while Pinkerton Philadelphia agencv was notified by telegraph. The story was that a gentleman (a broken had seen and spoken with Mr.

Dulmonico on Thursday evening on a train bound from Jersey City to Philadelphia. It waa not explainea why tbe gentleman had not made some effort to secure the missing man. or had not at least notified tbe family or the detectives promptly. Mr. Lorenzo Christ said late last evening that he knew uothlng of the matter.

AMUSEMENTS. CBVTHAL JCTJSIC HALL. The Beethoven Society last evening Inaugurated their choral season to a fair -sized aud discriminating audience, presenting for the first time in America Kiel Gade's cantata, "Psyche." The work is founded upon the combination of the mythological romances of Cupid and Psyche, and Eurydice, and ia its allegorical signifii-ance presents Psyche as a human soul, purified by trials for a higher life of eternal enjoyment Tnc argument of the cantata is as follows: Psyche, a dauguter of a King in Hellas, a maiden beautiful and pure, excited the wrath ot Venus by refusing to join in tbe rites of that goddess, and, at the command of her, from whose altar she had turned away, she was borne off to a lonely height, there to lie made the bride of a fearful demon. At night, when at length, overcome by terror and desjiair. she falls asleep, a Zephvr and some Genii are sent to bear her to a place of safety and happiness.

When she awakes, darkness still around her, an invisible chorus tells her she is destined to become tbe bride of a god, who will hereafter disclose hiraaclf. The god calls to Psyche, without discovering himself, and tells 'her he wishes to espouse ber, but warns ber, on pain of separation from him. and deata, never to give way to her curiosity and ask who he is. They thereupon plight their troth, and an invisible chorus iamikes night to conceal the lovers' jov. Before daybreak he departs, to return at nightfall During the day tae Zephyr and tbe Genii beguile tbe loneliness of Ptyc he by auurances of his certain reappearance.

Pyscbe, however, doubts whether the revelation of the god may not be some malevolent device of Yen us, or if not, whether the jealousy and envy of the goddess will allow him to return. The remembrance of her former sufferings so overpowers Psyche that, in renewed terror and despair, she demands from tbe chorus the name of ber husband. Trier lament ber fatal question and announce her predicted doom. Her husband appears, and in him she recognizes tbe beautiful god Eros, who in sorrow announces to ber that be has not the power to alter tbe docree of fate aud of Venus. But as Psyche passes away iu death he proclaims his intention appealing to Zeus for a reversal of the doom In tho third part of the cauUta the scene is laid in hades, whither lpycbe bas descended.

She ix. counseled, but in vain, to drown the memory of ber love in the waters of the Lethe. Her tears and prayers prevail with Proserpine, the queen of the lower world, who grants her permission to revisit earth in order to obtain from Eros tbe forgiveness of her fault When she leaves hades she Is met by Eros, who freely forgives her. Assured of pardon, she would cheerfully have returned to hades, but Eros transports her with himself to tbe celestial abode of tbe gods, where she receives from Zeus the gift of immortal youth. In general terms tbe work may be qualified as occupying a middle ground between the modern romantic school and tbe music of Mendelssohn In its development It shows the rosy and delicate melodic flow that characterizes the composer's score of "The Crusaders." It has some strong dramatic effects, and some parts are well sustained in intensity, but, taken as a whole, it has not tbe strength or symmetry of the composition of "The Crusaders.

The instrumental prelude that opens the work has some effective phases in contrasting tho happy hours of in -nocence to the scenes of gloom and banishment The chorus of the introduction following is strongly dramatic in its de-' scription. and involves a very effective phrase that has a re undo orchestral accompaniment: "When deep is the night, in and in storm, shall rise up a demon; Psyche shall he require to espouse him; her form shall he fold in fearful embrace, cold as ice," that forms a frequent motive, in the cantata. The orchestration of the work is varied and finished, and although the interpretation last cveuing was sometimes more vigorou than necessary, still the orchestral recources at command are to be commended, as well as tbe finished and effective work of the chorus which gave the rendition much of its interest The solos are sustained and trying, and the artists, considering the. circumstances of an initial presentation, are to be congratulated. Miss Mary Beelss, soprano, ang the title role of Psyche with praiseworthy appreciation of its sustained and melodic dramatic difficulty.

There was an occasional vibrant quality, or a lap's; from tone, but the beauty of enunciation, the appreciation of dramatic coloring and the strength of sustained effects, were qualities that marked the artist nod obscured the minor defects. The role of Psyche abounds in technical trials, and the style and strength with which Miss Bee be took high in the Inst combination with chorus had a thrilling effoct, and merited the applause it won Mr. A. E. Stoddard, who assumed the part of Eros seemed to have baaed his standard upon French pitch," and the orchestral accompaniment was too high for him.

His voice is of good quality, and Is used in good style, although the musio waa evidently not within the most congenial range of his voice. Miss Mae Phuenix. oontralto, was heard to the usual advantage with her fine quality- of voice in Perseplne, and Mr. Charles A. Knorr and Mrs.

Ia Kichardsoa aa Genii and ZephyT were heard to pleasing effect. The work, while posse swing evident orchestral and choral beauties, aa well as difficult solo effects, failed to arouse much enthusiasm in the audience. Miss Fanny Bloomfeld, pianestr, provided a delightful preface to the evening's entertainment, In presenting Henselt'a "Concerto." She displayed a thorough appreciation for tbe spirit of the work in ber interpretation, and her playing enlisted strength as well as refinement, 8 he recetved a hearty encore, and responded with Leschetlzky'a which was characterized by grace and sentiment in its translation. This was Miss Bloomfeld' first appearance since her return from Europe, and it is evident that she merited the commendation that she earned by her study while abroad. GEMXRAL "mCENTIOH.

The new spaper clipping that tbe letter refers to is a long tLpatch from Washington. D. dated May which dilates upon the Iact that the counterfeit tont tuat were discovered at that time must have been printed from plates that came directly from the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. The din-patch fully seta forth tbe perfection that has been attained in tbe printing ot these counterfeits, and goes into a political baramrue to show that the employes of that bureau are not the must nouest aud responai-ble people in the world. The dispatch further states that the government detectives have devotee their attrntion to simply recovering the plates without convicting tbe parties found tn poaaesMon of the bogus bonds, and that by reaon of the corruption tn the Department of Engraving and Printing, this only led to the attraction of other plates.

The last paragraph of tbe telegram dilates fully upon the exact perfection of the bonas as PRINTED BY THE COtnSTEBrErTEBS. and it Is to this that tbe letter mainly refer. The letter itself is written by the hectograph process, and plainly shows that it was intended for a w.de circulation. It again brings to notice the old ease of bond counterfeiting, in which James B. Doyle was the only man sentern-ed to a term in the Penitentiary.

As the clipping set forth, the rase, for some reason, was not pushed to the extreme. and thin letter plainly shows that tbe detectives of the Secret Service Department did not at that time succeed in recovering all the plates that were out Or if they did get all those At that time, they failed to stop the channel through which the plates ran into the hands of the counterfeiters. The internal evileuee of the letter show? that these bonds, printed by Kane, have had a wide circulation, and that they have been successfully passed tn considerable amount- here in Chicago. So fnr tbe local police have not taken anr steps in reirard to tbe letter, and the local of fleers of tbe secret service have not yet been informed of the matter. The police here think that the letter may be a direct clew to another branch of the (amoui bond-counterfeiting gang of winter The tart that lire latter fed into the bands of tbe police certainly points to one ot two things, viz: That it was A LEOlTUt ATB "TT'Ol" on the part of the gentleman who handed it over to the itergeant at the Harrison Street Station; ox, he was a person who wished to tell something- and did not wish to tell too much.

The poliee suppose that the case, is a legitimate one. and they are now eager to besiu tbe search for the man who wrote this letter and the man who received it Outside of all this theiv arises the horrible suspicion that this is nothing more thftn the innocent game of the "boodle peddler." To the uninitiated this can he explained bv saying that the "boodle Is a confidence man who freely offers to sell counterfeit money to any one. aud when the purchaser presents himself, a confederate by a sleight of hand trick, substitutes a bundle of worthless paper for the money that is said to be a splendid counterfeit The local police will give the matter the fullest investigatloii. and time only can tell whether it ia a good case or only a thin fraud. The weak point In the case.

It this be the letter of a genuine counterfeiter, is the fact that he will semi nothing by mall and tbe letter is written by the bextograph process. A little telegrapit-tnr to New York will settle the whole matter. This step has been taken, but no answer has as yet been received. losses by iKDlAXAPotrs, Jan. 1L Tho hominy mills of Backus Co.
