nttU LOVE BY TELEPHONE. HOW A ROCHESTER YOUNQ'MAN AN- NIHILATES SPACE. Rochester Herald. Since the days when bold Leander, con sumed with love for the beautiful priestess. Hero, swam the tempestuous waters of the Hellespont, that he might bask In the smiles of his inacnorita, Cupid has laughed at all barriers.

In these days science conies to the assistance of the lover, and through the mediums of postal, telegraph and, lastly. telephone systems, abridges the distance which frequently Intervenes between "two souls with, but a single thought" and "two hearts that beat as one." Love by telephone Is by no means a novel experience, but an Instance of love maklne by the "long distance" that has- recently come under the observation of a Herald reporter, will serve a an Illustration possibilities afforded to lovers In this en. lightened age that were not available in the day of Hero and Leander. Could bravs Leander have "called up" Hero aad told her to look --out for him, the ohaace are that she would not have allowed her light to go out and the 'pathetic story of thelt love and its tragic end might never have been told. But that Is another story, and has nothing to de with the one about to be told.

Somewhere In Rochester, no matter where, is a particular young man who Is engaged to a young lady In a distant city. Having doubtless, in the impatience ef his love, become dissatisfied with process of communication by mall, he prefers to talk to his lady Cove over the long-distance telephone. His office is connected wtwth by a metallic circuit, and at a certain hour each day. which line doe nt vary a minute from one month's end to another, the "trunk line" operator Is "caMed up" and the proper connections made. The unusual regularity and frequency of this call has aroused the woman's curiosity of the "hello girl." and now the se cret is out.

It would be a sacrilege to ai- vuige. the loveiaden messages that dal.y pass, over the wires; out wrmm or paa-vlon. which, could she but hear tt, would cause Ameli'e Rives Chanler to fear that he had lived and written but In valn they re excelled only by the charming freedom with which they are exchanged, and the delightful secrets which they detail. "Hello, Anna, Is this your' Is usually the first and cautious salutation of the. amorous young man.

Yes, George, dear, and then something like S-P-W-E-E-P, S-P-W-E-E-P comes over the wires that Talrty makes the switch board Jingle. "Wasn't that sweet, dear." replies George and then he goes on to tell Anna how much better It would be If he were only with her and finally assures her that he will be with her next Sunday. 'Do you remember what a nice time we had the last time you were here: oh. I shall never forret It." and here the conversation lanses into incomprehensible secrets of which this raunlt have not a few. The date of the wedding has not oeen de termined upon, but Anna has promised to fix the matter up not less than May, and now they, are trying to decide upon the George wants to take his own good dominie from Kocnesier, wnne Anna fears that her mamma will not near to such an arrangement.

The tete-a-tete winds up with that chirping sound that makes th switchboard Jingle again ana tne instruments are hung up with a click. This love affair over tne teiepnene nas been going on for some time, and dally furnishes rare amusement for those who are in position to hear It. DIRECTORS ELECTED.
