BALTIMORE. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1859 The DAILY EXCHANGE PRICES CCRRENT, being a reliable and comprehensive review of the Baltimore Markets for the past week, neatlv printed on letter sheet, uiay be obtained at our counting room. Yesterday morning, at fifteen minutes past eleven o'clock, BROWN was hanged at Charlcstown, in Jefferson county, Virginia. After a perfectly fair trial, lie had been found guilty of treason, murder, and inciting slaves to three, capital offences. One life trebly forfeit, has thus made such expiation, as one life may, for crimes such as one man has seldom committed.

Treason, murder, and stirring up of servile war these the things whose perpetrators arc the fit fruit of the gallows-tree, or shall we call the doers, heroes and martyrs? This is a question worth consideration, though it can admit of but one answer. If JOHN BROWN was sane, he was a tremendous villain, destined to take rank in history with GUV FAWKES, and kindred conspirators, whose daring brains and steady nerves could conceive and carry out crimes of such vast proportions as to cheat fools into believing them sublime actions. If Heaven, which will take his unreason into the account he has already rendered, will know how to pardon the earthly judge who failed to detect the subtle and fatal defect, the suspicion of which no one repudiated more strenuously than himself and those who knew him best. The citizens of Richmond have formed an association whose members are pledged to abstain from all social and business intercourse with the North. The example thu3 set may, in the present state of public feeling at the South, he followed at any moment by the people of that section with an earnestness and unanimity that would render the movement one of sad and serious import.

Certainly, if the lenders and organs of the Republican party fairly represent the sentiments of the mass of our countrymen of the Northern States, we might regret, but could not he surprised at, the step which has been taken in Virginia. Wc do not speak now of the principles of that party, so fur as they are set forth in what are commonly called or explained in Congress, but confine our allusions to the tone and temper it has latterly displayed, and which convey a clearer meaning to us than we gather from its formal phrases. It is all very well for its Conventions to resolve that they disapprove of any attempt to interfere with the institutions of the South, and for The Tribune to protest that it desires only to carry out a policy which WASHINGTON and JEFFERSON once favored; for though we may dissent even then from their conclusions, we can dispute them without rancor. But when these protestations are tendered ns with a look of hate, and an air of defiance, we show no undue distrust if we pause to weigh their worth before confiding in them. If we have been at all suspicious of this party, we think we have not been so without good reason: for the very assemblages that have sometimes defined, in plain though becoming terms, their political principles, have, during the same sessions, boisterously applauded the most incendiary harangues, and bailed with enthusiasm doctrines that breathed treason against the South and disloyalty to the Constitution.

The Tribune while affecting to reprobate the acts of BROWN and bis companions, has deliberately, and day by day, encouraged their repetition. In its editorial columns it has faintly condemned him, by admitting he had done a wrongful deed; but it has, nevertheless, filled its pages with all the commendatory extracts it could collect together, in order to prove that be was doubly a hero, because be was a martyr. It has given a world-wide circulation to the letters received by the numerous agents who are engaged in raising funds for his family, through a hundred ingenious devices, cr in securing materials for the lives that many of them will find their own profit in writing; and in this way it has sedulously sought to awaken general sympathy for the "glorious," the "noble," the old man." In the long and frequent communications it lias published from its Charlestown correspondent, the murderer has been extolled as an exalted and righteous being, while denunciation and ridicule were incessantly lavished upon the people whose kindred he sent to their untimely graves. No one can read that paper, and fail to see that it holds BROWN up to universal admiration, and regards his cause as just and worthy of imitation. The Tribune stands foremost, but not alone, in this equivocal position; while a multitude of journalists and public men, both lay and clerical, disdaining all disguises, have lauded the manner and purpose of BROWN'S invasion, and have discussed it amid alternate prayers and imprecations.

EMERSON has grown fervid on the rostrum, and BEKCHER has waxed frantic in the pulpit; and the direct tendency of their teachings has been to encourage their hearers to bear no longer with their neighbors' sins, but to extirpate them with fire and the sword. do not believe these 1o he the views of the great body of the people at the North. It is because the conservative and right-minded portion of them have no opportunity of giving expression to their sentiments, that those of the fanatics pass apparently unrebuked. The excited few rush clamorously to the press or platform, and make loud outcry; but the calmer and more thoughtful many are content to be silent, trusting that the tempest will in a little while subside. They ought, however, to bestir themselves, lest the mischievous demagogues succeed now in creating a sectional ill-feeling that nothing can allay.

The good and true citizens, who wish still to abide by the political compact our fathers entered into, can readily make such manifestations of their power as will prove that they still constitute an immense majority in the North; and this will he sufficient to discourage the zealots there, to reassure the South, and convince the citizens of Richmond, perhaps, that their movement is at least premature. The times demand the display of a little practical patriotism. If the political leaders, in cither section of the country, have gone too far, the people need not follow blindly those whom they are under no obligation to serve. On the contrary, they arc bound to repudiate, in a crisis like this, all those, be they who they may, who have lent themselves to the views or projects of the extremists, whether in Massachusetts or in Mississippi, whose narrow prejudices or selfish ambition have been the cause of so much discord. The perpetuity of the UNION is worth all the sacrifices that can he made to secure it.

It is no mere senlimental delusion that animates those who would uphold it. A thousand glorious memories already lend a lustre to our nationality, and its future is big with noble hopes for coming generations. We believe the American people are unwilling to forego the destiny that awaits them, and we therefore trust they will bring to speedy shame and destruction the schemers and fanatics who labor for a dissolution of the UNION. NON-INTERCOURSE SUSPENSION OF observe, says the Charlotte (X. Bulletin, that several of our Southern exchanges are discussing the propriety, editorially and through contributions from their correspondents, of carrying out a non-intercourse policy between the merchants of the South and importers and jobbers of the North, suspending entirely the trade that has been carried on between the commercial and mercantile communities of the two sections.

We believe that there is wisdom in this line of policy, and that it the proposition is sustained, and strict non-intercourse observed, it will be productive of incalculable good to the South. On Wednesday last one of the most prominent business uien of Charlotte, who had been called upor. by an agent of a New York house, remarked that it was his impression he had made out his last hill for goods in the New York it was very probable he would hereafter make his purchases in Baltimore or further South. In reply to the above expression of an opinion, the agent' remarked that he had discovered that many merchants throughout the South had come to a similar determination, and that if that line of policy should be adopted generally throughout the Southern and Western States, it would produce a great change in the conduct and sentiment of the people of the it would undoubtedly bring about a reaction, and cause a more healthy sentiment than could be efleeted by any other Hue of policy. merchants of Tennessee have memorialized the Legislature to impose a heavy tax upon Northern runners who come into that State selling goods by sample.

FROM WASHINGTON. is said that there is a movement on foot, among men of wealth and political influence, quite capable of carrying ont their progrmme, to furnish the Liberal Government of Mexico the means and men to overcome the opposition in that country. It is proposed in legal shape, and it is believed the Administration will not discourage, but possibly favor it. It is believed the hour of necessity has arrived, and the Mexican Government will yield its national prejudices against foreign aid, in view of the important consequences to result. A report was current yesterday in Washington, says a correspondent, that the programme of the lack Republicans for the organization of the House had been made in New York, with Sherman, of Ohio, for Speaker, and Forney for Clerk.

The members who were not consulted repudiate Hal! at least of the Republican members are in favor ot taking the candidates from their own ranks and against amalgamation. Senator Cameron, and most ot the opposition I'ennsylvanians, are deadly opposed to I crney, and will nt support him. HEALTH OK GEHRITT New York Tribune, of yesterday, says We resterdar saw a letter from the physician of the Dtica Asylum of the date of Nov. 28, in which it was stated that Gerritt Smith was "greatly improved," and "is now quite himself." Permission has been accorded to Mr. Smith's nephew, the Hon.

John Cochrane of this city, either to visit his uncle in person, or correspond with him by letter THE EXECUTION OF BROWN. PROCEEDINGS OF THE MILITARY. ARRIVAL OP MRS. BROWN. Interview Between Brown ami His Wife.

GENERAL ORDERS OF THE TROOPS OUR SPECIAL CHAHLESTOWN, Dec. 2, 1859. Editors Daily Exchange 1 csterday was a day full of excitement. From early in the morning until twilight the military were actively engaged in going through the ditlerent evolutions, and the tife and kettle-drum were heard continually. In the morning, Company of Richmond, of which 0.

Jennings Wise, son of the Governor and editor of the Richmond Enquirer, is a private, paraded through the different streets. This company is very efficient, and is composed of gentlemen of intelligence and worth. They are now enduring all the hardships incident to camplife. Yesterday morning a hand-bill was found posted in different parts of the town purporting to he from head-quarters, and intended to burlesque the military arrangements. It was written in language very offensive, and met with an almost unanimous condemnation.

In fact, the better portion of the community, and those whose interests are real and tangible, condemned it, and looked upon it as a base piece of malignity, and worthy of the most thorough contempt. The commanding officer ordered them to be torn down and destroyed, which was done. The entire community sustain the Governor in his acflon in the premises, and are ready to second him to any extent his judgment may deem proper to go. The fact is, that Governor Wise has not made this display with any expectation that a rescue would be attempted. On the contrary, he feels assured that, however much Brown's friends and sympathizers North may talk and threaten, but few of them had sufficient courage to join an expedition when there was a chance of success, much less one that would be entirely hopeless.

His object in concentrating such a large force is to awaken a military spirit throughout the State, and thoroughly arouse the people to a sense of the necessity of being prepared for any crisis. Mr. George Saddler was engaged on yesterday making Brown's coffin. It will be of plain walnut, without inscription. His shop was visited hundreds of people, who begged a piece of the board.

Some received a piece, whilst others received pieces of walnut, not of the board out of which the coffin was made: but in their anxiety to get it, they did not ask the question whether it was genuine or not. A few days since, John Moore, a very wealthy and estimable gentleman, visited Brown. Shortly after entering, Brown introduced the subject of slaverv, but Mr. Moore told him that he had no disposition to discuss it. Brown asked him how many slaves he owned, when Mr.

M. replied he did not know the number, but he was sure he had one, a woman eighty years of age, whose eyesight, lie was sorry to say, had failed. He had a few days before given an eminent physician SIOO for operating on them, and if it was possible to restore her sight he would give $5,000. Brown asked liirn what he would take for the old servant, when Mr. Moore replied that all the abolitionists in the North were too poor to buy her.

The conversation here ended. Brown, in conversation with the jailor, said that if he did not sec his wife before he was executed, he would like to express his desires relative to the disposition of his body. Gov. had assured him that it would be at the disposal of his friends, and accordingly the jailor was requested to say to Mrs. Brown, or whoever came for it, that he did not desire to have it removed North, but wanted it placed upon a pyre and burnt, and the ashes urned.

lie also requested that the bodies of his sons, who were killed at the Ferry, might be disinterred and disposed of in the same manner. The last part of the request could not have been complied with, as tho physicians of Winchester had used their bodies in the dissecting-room. Yesterday morning Brown was more than ordinarily cheerful. The jailor remarked that he hoped his fine flow of spirits would continue on to-day. Brown replied that he "knew the community expected that he would show fear, but they would find themselves disappointed.

They did not understand the quality of material of which lie was made." After this remark, he took a hearty laugh. On Monday last, Brown wrote to his wife, who was in Philadelphia, to come he desired to see her. Early yesterday morning she arrived at the Ferry, and was escorted to this city under charge of mounted men. When the carriage containing her neared the town, it was stopped, and the entire military force, which was just preparing for a dress-parade, were arranged in line along the street, while detachments were placed near the jail to keep back the crowds of citizens who were anxious to get a sight of her. The carriage was drawn slowly through tho town to the jail.

Mrs. Brown got out, and Capt. Moore, of the Montgomery Guards, Richmond, which are stationed at Harper's Ferry, proffered his arm. which was accepted, and conducted her into the prison and the presence of her husband. There was 110 exhibition of distress when they met.

Brown embraced lier with a smile, pressed her to his bosom, and then requested her to be seated. It was difficult to tell which was the calmest. One of the jailors remarked that she was as good a man as Brown. She entered the jail a few minutes after three o'clock and remained until six. The time was occupied in arranging about the disposition of other matters of a worldly character.

She left the jail under a similar escort, and was sent to the Ferry. The following orders were issued last night: HEADQUARTRRS, CUARLZSTOWX, Nov. 30,1850. General Order, No. 23.

The following Military arrangements for the day of execution will be observed: 1. The above troops are under the general command of Col. P. T. Gibson. 7.

The escort of the prisoner will he composed of the Fauquier Company of Scott; the Wheeling Fencibles, Capt. the Monticello Guards, Capt. Williams; Petersburg Greys. Capt. Scott; Company of the First Regiment, Capt.

BASIL FRENCH, Military Sec. This morning at an early hour the military ere all astir. At nine o'clock," the field was taken possession of by the Fauquier Company, and the other military assumed the positions assigned to theui. But very few strangers are in town. The accusation against Dr.

J. C. Aver, of Lowell, for stabbing R. S. Fay, the treasurer of the -Middlesex Mills, has been withdrawn because the prosecutor found that no complaint against him could be sustained.

The fact is that Dr. Aycr merely defended himself as best he might, with a penknife he happened to have in his hand, against a cowardly assault made on him from behind, with the premeditated intention to dishonor and punish lim for the exposure he has made and is making of the wrongs practiced by the ofliccrs upon our manufacturing corporations. This community not only upholds the Doctor's successful defence of his person. but it heartily approves his course in pubiiclv denouncing the Tite-Barnacle Family management abuses of our public property for private ends. Dr.

THE PRESIDENT'S -document will not he sent to Congress till the House The reason stated lor this course is, that something might occur in the meantime requiring a modification of that important document. Besides, shonid the struggle for an organization continue many days, it is probable the Executive will have additional information on two important qu-stions to communicate, namely, those of the San Juan difficulty and our Mexican relations. The next arrival from California will probably bring more information as to the result of General Scott's On the last arrival information was not as complete as N. Y.

They knocked the heads out of the whiskey, brandp "and beer barrels, and turned the liquor into the street. To complete the work they tore the furnaces up, broke the kettles and destroyed the hops and malt. Booles intends to bring' an adtion for damages.
