LOUIS G. CONE r- Hail Taken Dow it a Few Xofoht's By Ancient. Histurii-fts. Mlititr Morning Triluiif: I notice an article published in the Courier-Informant some time. cilice written by Prof-fessor Hall, giving an opinion as to the valine of the water in the ocean being salt.

It is seldom that 1 c-ritisize any of the learned processors in their scientific articles, but it is a well known fact, that an ancient mariner is to biatue for the brine of the Many years ago. (the exa-t date lam not able to frive) he was employed in -onvevin- salt in his ship from Isles to the coat of at that time this employment was quite renumerative and had the distance been less, a fortune would have leen speedily realized. Jn one of his voyages, sitting1 on the -deck of his vessel, he expressed a wish that he might be able to procure salt nearer home. No sooner had the wish A'ieeii expressed when the form of man suddenly rose up. from the water, accompanied by a.

host of sea nymphs, who assisted biua on board the vessel. Approaching the old mariner he informed him that he had heard his wish, and reeling interested in his future success in life, had come on board to grant it. Stating tliat he conld furnish him with the latest improved machine that in a short time would grind him a ship load of salt. TJiis so excited the old mariner that fie spring to his feet craspinsr the liand of the stranger declaring that he was willing to iav him Jiny price if he would furnish the machine to him and sat nothing about it to anyone else. The st ranger pushed him aside with the remark that money was not his object, his desirse lein only to asiat an old friend.

Turning around he uttered a word unknown to "Uny earthly being at which thousands of sea nymphs appeared awaiting his camnxand, which was '-return and bring the latest improved machine for grinding salt" at the command every nymph jm -disappeared. but speedily reappeared pushing before them the wonderful machine, which was hoisted ou board the ship and placed in position. "When all was completed the uiysterous personage gave the command "grind fcjener," the machine oledient to the word commenced moving, out of winch poured a volume of beautiful salt crystals, the like of which had never been seen. In the course of an hour the ship was tilled and the stranger gave the command "stop kjeuer," and the machine immediately obeyed. Turning then he gave mariner explicit directions regarding the future use of the machine, the word for starting and sloping same.

Then wishing him success he stepped overboard and disappeared as suddenly and mysterously as he had appeared. The uiariuer overjoyed with his prise sailed for shore, sold his cargo of suit tt. a handsome price and returned immediately tosea for fearsome prying rascal might discover his secret. When well out at sea he gave the machine the command griud, using the word, in a diorttinie the ship was loaded, but being onl3 a short distance out, concluded to let it grind a heavy load. When the ship was loaded to its utmost, tonage the command to stop was given, but alas, he had forgotten the word and the machine kept on grinding sinking the ship aud is to-day grinding away and has been for the past four thousand year, which has salted the entire ocean.
