She was Mrs. Marion Merryman, who had been a clerk in the auto license department of the office.

Mrs. Merryman's husband said he felt she was fired because their family and that of Shirley McDonald, who opposed Jorgenson in last Tuesday's election, were friends. Mrs. McDonald's husband is a former supervisor. County Treasurer Jorgenson had a different explanation.

He said that Mrs. Merryman's husband, Dave, had previously appeared before the county supervisors with complaints about the conduct of the treasurer's office, and questions as to his wife's wages as compared with others employed in the office. Jorgenson said that the treasurer is responsible for running the office, not the supervisors, and he had made a decision some time back that in the interests of office harmony he might have to dismiss Mrs. Merryman. Jorgenson cited 341.3 of the Code of Iowa which says in summary that office appointments may be revoked in writing by the officer making the original appointment, and such written dismissal shall be filed and kept in the auditor's office.

Mrs. Merryman was handed a reprint of the Code and a copy was duly filed, Jorgenson said. The Merrymans said they had stayed out of the recent political contest, but felt that a long-standing friendship could not be buried because of a political contest. The McDonalds are Democrats and Dave Merryman is a Republican as is Jorgenson. The latter said the political contest was not a major factor in his decision.
