The third-, fourth- and fifth-graders from Nueva Escuela Americana, the New American School, have been involved in an exchange program with pupils at Curlew Creek since the 1990-91 school year. In May 1991, the New American School brought 35 members of its chorus to Curlew Creek. The following year, members of Curlew Creek's chorus, under the direction of music specialist Carta Taylor, visited the New American School in Mexico and the two schools have been alternating visits since.

The children merged their voices on stage at Countryside High School on Friday night. Afterward they celebrated at a "rock 'n' roll" party at Curlew Creek, where an area had been decorated for the occasion. "This is our fifth year with the program," said Nancy Rhoads (a.k.a. Ms. Crayola), a Curlew Creek art teacher who helps organize the exchange each year.

Many of the children have Saturday from in 14kt. Gold and Diamond Watch from Jewelry Time developed friendships that successfully span the time between visits, she said. "Some families of pupils at Curlew Creek are playing hosts to the children from Mexico whose parents were hosts to their children last year," she said. "We're trying to set up computers (at the school) so that they can better communicate." In addition to their performance at Countryside High School, the Mexican pupils performed at Curlew Creek, Star-key Elementary in Seminole, Sawgrass Lake Elementary in St. Petersburg and Forest Lakes Elementary in Oldsmar.

"Everybody wants them to come back," Rhoads said. "There just isn't enough time to go around." But when the rush ended this weekend, Rhoads and Taylor had something to look forward to. "Next year it will be our turn to go down and visit them," Rhoads said.
