Hanson has ordered a new trial of a damage suit in which a federal jury awarded Mrs. Berniece Silverthorn of Eighth $27,500 personal injury damages. The suit was filed in connection with a collision between her auto and the car of the defendant, William Hennigan, of Omaha, June 5, 1967, at Third and Crocker streets.

Mrs. Silverthorn had asked damages of $50,875. Judge Hanson said allowing the verdict to stand would be a "gross miscarriage of justice" because the evidence did not warrant the verdict rendered. He also said the jury failed to follow the court's instructions. The verdict was returned Nov.

SHAM NED RIDDLE "I hope you had your finger off that push button when you sneezed like that." 40 Hurt in Car Accident at Dead End A Des Moines man escaped serious injury Thursday night when his auto plunged down a 10-foot embankment near Fifteenth and Crocker streets. Raymond L. Smith, 55, of 4041 Twelfth st. suffered head and face, cuts in the accident about 11:20 p.m. He was treated at Broadlawns Polk County Hospital, then released.

Police said Smith was traveling east on Crocker and, apparently not knowing it ended at Fifteenth street, continued driving straight ahead into a graveled parking lot and then over the embankment. Damage to Smith's auto was estimated at $1,500. No charges were filed. After Smith's accident, police put up barricades with blinking lights at the intersection to warn other motorists of the dead end. Hurt in Attack By 4 Men Here Michael Weathers, 27, of Hannibal, was treated at Mercy Hospital for hand and face cuts suffered in an altercation with four men early Friday.

Police said Weathers was walking on Cottage Grove avenue near Mac Vicar Freeway shortly after midnight when the four men jumped him and began kicking and striking him. Weathers told police he escaped from his assailants and ran down to the freeway where a motorist gave him a ride to the hospital. Weathers said he was returning to a friend's home in the 1400 block of Eighteenth street after visiting his girl friend when the incident occurred. He said he had just arrived in Des Moines Thursday.
