35 KOKOMO lnd.) MORNING TIMES Sondoy July 23, 1967 First time since 1920's Robed Klansmen appear on Hoosier streets MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (UPI) For the first time since the heyday of the Ku Klux Klan in Indiana in the 1920s, robed Klansmen appeared Saturday on the streets of Hoosier towns in a demonstration aimed at showing that the "KKK is a truth not a rumor." A caravan of about 30 cars carrying robed Klansmen traveled from Greenwood to Martinsville Saturday afternoon visiting Franklin, Bargersville, Waverly and Mooresvillealone the way. At Mooresville and again here, members of the group left their cars to walk the streets and hand out KKK literature. The demonstration was peaceful and there were no incidents. In the only thing resembling an incident, aspectator shouted something derogatory at the passing Klansmen at Waverly.

One Klan member slammed on the brakes and stopped his car but he did not leave the vehicle there was no trouble. William M. Chaney, Greenwood, self-styled 'imperial representative" of the KKK in Indiana, led the cavalcade in a convertible bedecked i American flags. The car was driven by a woman with a small boy at her side. A pickup truck prominent in the cavalcade bore signs with such messages as "Save our land, join the Klan," Join PARADE NEW HOMES building ymg SAVE NOW FOR YOUR DOWN PAYMENT AN INSURED ACCOUNT SAVE WHICH EARNS 1.

The cavalcade began at Greenwood and drove to nearby Franklin where it circled the Johnson County Courthouse before heading for Bargersville, Waverly and Mooresville.

It was at Mooresville where the group made its first stop and Klansmen circulated through the Saturday afternoon shopping crowds to hand out literature. The Klansmen wore a type of hood which showed their faces, unlike the regalia worn in the 1920s when the Klan, then headed by D. C. Stephenson, was a power in the state. At that time, members of the order wore hoods which concealed their identities.

Original plans for Saturday's demonstrations had called 1 parades here and at Mooresville but authorities in communities refused to grant parade permits. Chaney then decided to have KKK members walk around the business districts handing out Klan literature. Chaney said the demonstration was intended as "peaceful" and was not designed to "harass or intimidate" anyone. "Violence is never part of our Earlier this week, Chaney offered, on behalf of the KKK, a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who burned a cross at the country home of a Negro near Whiteland. He denied the KKK had any connection with the cross-burning.
