J' 't 1 i tiVJ'f J' 'ti I SAN DIEGO (UPI) It's now on to Pittsburgh for the rejuvenated Houston Oilers, who suddenly have a new cast of characters in their march toward the Super Bowl. Houston, with its stunning 17-14 upset of the San Diego Chargers in a playoff Saturday, takes on Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium for the American Football Conference title. I. Pittsburgh advanced to the AFC championship game by trouncing Miami, 34-14, Sunday.

The AFC titlist goes on to the Super Bowl Jan. 20 at Pasadena's Rose Bowl. For the Oilers, it marks the second straight year they have reached the AFC championship game as a wild card team and only the second time in their 10-year NFL history that they have made the playoffs. The Steelers whipped Houston, 34-5, in last year's championship game at Three Rivers Stadium. We have a chance now at what we started out for this season and that's playing in the AFC championship," said Oiler Coach Bum Phillips, following the win over the Chargers.

"I've been in this business for 31 years and I've never seen a game like today's. You hear a lot about the game being a character builder but today was a character finder." It looked bleak for the' injury-riddled Oilers at the outset of the 'game. The Chargers, AFC West champions with a 12-4 record, marched in for a touchdown on their first possession and on their next drive Dan Fouts was setting up to pass deep in Oiler territory. Strong safety Vernon Perry, whose picture doesn't even appear in the 1979 Houston media guide, picked off a Fouts pass at the Houston 18. It was the first of four interceptions for Perry in a remarkable day that also saw him block a field goal and carry the ball 57 yards to set up a Houston score.

His interceptions set an NFL record for playoff competition. Perry, who was cut by the Chicago Bears from their preseason camp in 1977 and played two years for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League, was signed by Houston as a free agent this year. "If the Canadian Football League never does anything else forthfNFL, it's done well by us," Phillips said. It was also a highlighted by the performance of second-line players. Gifford Nielsen, who had played, only one full game during the regular season, was at quarterback in place of the injured Dan Pastorini and little used Rob Carpenter and Booby Clark took turns at filling in for the injured Earl Campbell.

Pastorini and Campbell, who both went down with groin injuries the previous week, are expected to return to action against Pittsburgh Sunday. "I don't think there are. too' many kids in this league that can corne lh and start a playoff game and have type of day that he Phillips 'said of Nielsen, who completed 10 of 19 passes for 111 yards and set up a Houston touchdown with a 14-yard scramble to the Charger 1-yard line. in "He has shown time and again that when he gets his shot at a fulltime job he's going to be one hangup quarterback." a When Nielsen appeared to' oe injured in the first half, Pastorini ran onto the field. "Bum didn't know I went out," said Pastorini.

"I was on my own. didn't know if Giff was hurt bad. I don't know if I could have played but I would have tried." "Dan just asked me if I was" OK," said Nielsen. "I guess he was ready to take over. He's played with much, more pain than I have and I know he wouldn't have let me take over, -And I didn't want him to get in.

"I'm a Christian, I'm a Mormon and Tm a Houston Oiler and I'm very proud -to be all three." Nielsen is a two-year veteran, from Brigham Young. The Lord was with me today, said Nielsen. "I could not be more proud of our team. Everyone rose to the occasion." Charlie Joiner, the Chargers, wide receiver, commented on the game, "I think we took it for granted. I think the people of San Diego took it for granted.

You got to fight in this game Ve let them take it away from They wanted it more than we did." -j FIRST RACE Pun $2,300, claiming 2-year-: eMs. S'l furiongs: MOPSF WT.
