He spends Monday through Wednesday morning preparing for the Florida State game. After recording a radio show with Bobby Bowden shortly after noon Wednesday, Deckerhoff turns his attention to the Bucs. He receives statistics on both teams in an overnight package and spends the rest of the week poring through the data. For both games, Deckerhoff produces computer-generated flip charts: diagrams displaying each team's starters in their actual positions on the field.

Next to the names are career and season statistics and other pertinent information Deckerhoff readily can refer to during the broadcasts. "Gene always does his homework," said Jeff Ryan, Bucs Network executive producer. "There's no way it would work if he didn't do his homework." Getting to the Florida State game is never a problem, but after the final gun sounds on the Seminoles, Deckerhoff is off to the races. Usually, he tapes the Bobby Bowden television show early Sunday morning, and then heads out to his Bucs destination. But he often flies back to Tallahassee from the FSUgame to tape the show, and then catches another flight to do the Bucs.

The toughest trip is the trek to Green Bay, which usually requires a flight to Milwaukee and a two-hour drive north to Green Bay. This year, Deckerhoff had to scramble to get to Chicago on Labor Day weekend because Delta canceled its flight from Tallahassee to Atlanta. A charter jet got him to Atlanta, but flight delays had him sitting on the runway. Deckerhoff finally took off 90 minutes after the original departure time and arrived at Soldier Field just 30 minutes before kickoff. From the hectic flights to the frequent failures of the Bucs, Deckerhoff remains upbeat.

"Some games you feel more disappointed than others," Deckerhoff said. "But you have to remember it's just one game. Every game is a new chapter, the Bucs just need to stop writing sequels." CASTROL SYNTEC 5W50 SYNTHETIC OIL 3.99 QT. DEXRON WMERCON OR TYPE TRANS QT. 50 Month All One Price That's the key for Deckerhoff.

The elation makes the frequent-flyer miles fun. While flying from Tallahassee to Green Bay, is difficult for Deckerhoff, the mental transition from the mighty Seminoles to the lowly Bucs is smooth and joyful. "It's NFL football," Deckerhoff said. "There's only 28 announcers who get to work hard all week and talk about the game on Sunday. I get to see the very best in the game.

"I have the opportunity to get paid to talk about sports, something I grew up loving." Those are all valid points, but it's hard to imagine anyone could stomach the feast-to-famine routine Deckerhoff endures every fall. In the five-plus years since Deckerhoff started his double duty, the Seminoles are 58-8 with two Atlantic Coast Conference titles and a national championship. The Bucs are 26-60 in the regular season. "The level of play (and effort) is the same," Deckerhoff said. "Florida State gets the breaks to win the big ballgames and the Bucs don't get those.

I can't remember the last time the Bucs got a break. "I'm not down on the Bucs, but I don't like losing just like coaches and players don't like losing. You can't let that show in your broadcast, however." Each Sunday, Deckerhoff has to perform a difficult Bucs balancing act. He avoids letting the mistakes decrease his energy, and at the same time he doesn't sugarcoat criticism. Going overboard with a long diatribe, however, would decrease his professionalism.

"You have to call the game the way it is, call it as you see it," Deckerhoff said. "But you don't want to belabor a point. Sometimes you have to bite your tongue, just like in college." Of course, Deckerhoff is not good at holding back his comments or enthusiasm. Anyone who thinks the Bucs' lack of success dents Deckerhoff's verve need only hear his call of Turner's historic punt return against the Lions. 3 With i Exchange STP Oil Filters Reg.
