Business Briefs Leased Wires to The Tribune A NEW PRODUCT for solid particles from refinery oil separating streams has been patented by a Gulf Oil Corp. subsidiary. The company said the product, called the "Gulftronic Separator" improves on existing technologies, such as centrifuges, by winnowing out more of the smaller particles in fluids. The company said the product may provide a better way to purify food and drug products. It could be used by the petroleum refining, chemical and vegetable oil processing industries, Gulf said.

The measure, sent to the House floor for debate, does not limit what someone who is awarded actual damages as a result of malpractice may receive for medical bills, rehabilitation, expense and salary loss. Other Changes The bill, the result of a study by a -sessions committee of the Legislature, would make several other controversial changes in Iowa law governing malpractice claims. One of the changes would permit judges in malpractice cases to review attorney's fees when a damage award is made. According to the bill, the judge would study the amount of the judgment, the legal issues involved and time spent by the injured person's attorney on the case before he ruled on whether the attorney's fees were excessive. The judge would have the power to reduce attorney's fees in the malpractice case, but the Iowa Supreme Court would review the judge's decision.

The measure also would Towans to arbitrate malpractice claims with their doctor or other medical officials involved. Arbitration Under the arbitration process, which sponsors of the bill said is patterned after a Michigan law, the patient and doctor would reach an agreement on the specific malpractice claim. However, the patient would be given 60 days to withdraw from the agreement.
