Our thirteenth annual Pheasants tor Veterans campaign got off to a somewhat slower start than a year ago with 210 birds received at the Des Moines veterans hospital b y Monday against 210 at the same time last year. The Glen Federsen American Legion post at Spencer came through with 82 ring-necks for the hospitalized veterans and the Manning V. F. W. post registered In with 61. There were definitely mora birds at the start of the sea-eon in the Swea City area, where I hunted, than we found a year ago. But the next day six of ns worked hard to bag six roosters near Thompson, 85 miles away. In our party were some good shooters including L. D. (Liu) Russell and R. H. (Bob) Reece of Des Moines, Harry Schmidt of Chicago, and M. Lars en and son, Jim, of Thompson. A few cocks Hushed out of range but we accounted for those that gave us a chance. Quail shooting has improved this year. Bag limits six birds have been taken with regularity by hunters using good dogs.
