Mrs. Ed Haines, wife of the Carthage Councilman, died at her home in that village yesterday morning and her husband is lying In a critical condition there. Mr. and Mrs. Haines and their daughter were injured 1 in an accident which occurred on Sunday, December 7.

While driving along the Carthage pike, near the fair grounds, A north-bound Cincinnati Interurban car collided with their buggy and all of them were thrown violently to the ground. Mrs. Haines received severe inJuries about the head and arms. Recently it was found necessary to amputate one of her thumbs. As a result of that operation lockjaw set in.

The Coroner's inquest, which was held yesterday, gives lockjaw as the cause of death. It is extremely doubtful whether or not Mr. Hames will recover. His injuries were also severe, and he has been confined to his bed almost all the time since the accident. It is thought that the shock of his wife's death will militate against his re- covery.

Adjourned in the Dark. The Lockland Council, which held an adjourned session in the Town Hall last evening. transacted part of Its business and then adjourned in the dark. Shortly before adJournment time came around the lights in the chamber went out simultaneously with all the other electric lights In the village. The cause of the darkness was the fact that a fuse blew out in the power house, but 1t was only a matter of 10 minutes or so betore the matter was adjusted.

At the Council meeting the salaries of the officials of the village, under the new code, were all fixed at the figures which now prevail. Herman Witte's Predicament. Herman Witte, the well-known real estate broker and capitalist, who resides in 8t Bernard, and is well known in this city and throughout the Milloreek Valley, is suffering from the effects of blood poisoning. About a week ago he was slightly scratched on the left hand by a piece of wire. He paid no attention to it until a day or NO since, when the member began to swell.

He then called on his family physician, who found that blood poisoning had set in. If Mr. Witte had delayed going to the doctor for a day or two longer the chances are that amputation of the hand would have been r.ecessary. Sewer Question Bothers Them. The St.

Bernard Improvement Association has called special meeting for night in the Town Hall. All citizens are requested to attend. as matters of importance are to be discussed. Among the things that will come up for consideration are the street-car fare question, the Carthage pike improvement and the proposition to build sewers in the village. This latter the most important question to be discussed.

The Improvement Association has advocated the construction of trunk sewer on the Carthage pike, and request that the whole of the cost be placed on the general tax duplicate of the village. Many citizens, and among them Mayor Schwegmann, are of the opinion that this should not be done unless the sewering of the streets be made general throughout the village. They claim that it would be an Imposition on the citizens at large to construct a sewer only on Carthage pike and to tax everybody for it. Candidates For Re-Election. Mayor Schwegmann, Marshal Nailor and Sealer of Weights and Measures Obert will all be candidates for re-election at the comIng spring election in St.

Bernard. They will all be on the Citizens' ticket. Each of these gentlemen has made for himself an enviable record. and it is thought that all of them will be re-elected without much trouble. Say They Were Married.

The denial of John Diehl, of Anderson, that he was married last week to Miss Evelyn Knapp. of Hartwell, has caused a flutter of excitement throughout the valley. Rev. Walker, the minister who was credited with having performed the ceremony, stated positively last night that he did do so. The parents of Miss Knapp also assert that their daughter was married to Mr.

Diehl. Alum Works Operating. The new alum works of the Jarecki Chemical Company at St. Bernard were put in operation yesterday with about 80 workmen. It is quite a large addition to the plant of the company.

Rev. Baum's Funeral. The funeral of the late Rev. Dr. Baum, pastor of the Carthage German Church, who died suddenly at his home early Monday morning.

GONE WITH Trusted Clerk of Hyde Park Grocer Is Among the Missing. Noppenberger, grocer at Hyde Park, is mourning the absence of trusted Louts Daum by name, who collector, parted for parts unknown Monday night without accounting for $23 be admitted ing collected earlier in the day. When he returned to the grocery after making collectiona Monday morning. Mr. Noppenberger says, he claimed to have lost $23, the amount he had collected.

Therefore a search was made for the money, good part of which, it was said, was in bills, but without success. Nothing more was said about the matter at the time by either the grocer or the collector, the former bellevi-1g that the money had been dropped in some residence or yard, and would be found and returned to him in due time. Daum has been boarding with his employer at the latter's residence on Madison road. lie came to supper as usual Monday evening. but excused himself for a moment, saying ho wanted to go to his room and make some change in his apparel.

When he had been absent an unusually long time Noppenberger went in search of him. On entering the room the first thing he saw was an open window, and evidences of a hurried ransacking of bureau drawers and wardrobe. Daum had taken every article of clothing belonging to him, packed them into a valise and dropped the latter out of the window. He had then made his escape from the house. Noppenberger came to this city as soon he discovered the fight of his former collector, and made a tour of the resorts which he was thought to frequent, but could learn nothing of his whereabouts.

The grocer Is now checking up the different routes to ascertain if any other collections have gone the way of the $23. Daum is described as being 22 years of age, of medium height, black hair and swarthy complexion, and smooth shaven. The franchise under the arrangement will not expire until July 1. 1903. By that time the company expects to have entered Norwood and established its terminal.
