All start on Monday with Channel 8's Live at 5 program. Bradley said the changes were necessary.

"It didn't take much to realize we didn't look as good (as the other Stations get face lifts as often as aging starlets do in Hollywood. Changing the set is one of the oldest tricks in broadcast journalism leading to the charge that broadcasting cares more about looks than substance. But Bradley said Friday the changes go beyond slapping a little teal-blue paint around. "In addition to putting more paint on the set, we're changing the content," said Bradley, who's aggressively tried to re-shape Channel 8 since being named news director earlier this year. "We are going to be in people's faces.

We are going to rise the journalistic level in this town." The new set cost about $25,000. The new computerized graphics system costs "hundreds of thousands." an attack by top-ranked which has new anchor John Wilson starting this September. In an exclusive peek on Friday, executives at Channel 8 unveiled the station's new look and attitude. Gone are the prissy pastel colors. Gone is "Newswatch 8." Instead, at "NewsChannel 8," the tones are bold and Dan Bradley, news director, hopes the reporting will be bolder.

Armed with a fat book of research on audience preferences, Bradley, Melinda Bacon, marketing director and Ruth Dial, art director, set about changing the look of the station in March. With that look, came format changes, including releasing anchor Marissa Morris from her contract. To reflect the station's more serious approach to news, the set was repainted a dark shade of blue with fuchsia accents. New graphics are clean and sharp. The theme music and opening credits have been "Whether we like it or not, this is a visual medium," he said.

"Viewer loyalty isn't there anymore. If you don't have a visual image that is appealing people will keep changing the channel." On the old set, anchors tended to blend in. "You want the anchors to pop out," said art director Dial. Anchors spent Thursday and Friday rehearsing on the new set, figuring out among other things what colors look good on air. Women will wear stronger color with a blue undertone, while men are always safe in blue suits.

Irene Maher, the anchor for the 5:30 portion of Live at Five, looked dandy in a pink dress, but her red lipstick clashed. You can hear the grumbles now: "TV is about news, not looks." Dan Bradley agrees. He'll also tell you TV is about viewers. If it takes blue and fuchsia to get them, grab the paint can. The anchors "popped" off the set, just like they were supposed to do.

The graphics had zing, with the right amount of transparency not too dark, not too light. The opening music, with that cool pinging, popping sound, had punch. It's amazing what a coat of fresh paint will do. That, and a new attitude. Paint your house and shuffle the furniture around and the neighbors might compliment you.

Redesign your set and news program and it might mean the difference between first and second place. And first place is where Channel 8 is determined to go this fall or at least stave off iims Collins settles suit Actor Joan Collins claimed victory Thursday after settling a $20-mil-lion lawsuit against the Globe tabloid for publishing photos of her apparently topless with her 32-year-old boyfriend in the back yard and bedroom of her French villa. "Everybody is entitled to their privacy," said the 58-year-old former star of the steamy TV soap opera Dynasty. The secret settlement came as jury selection was set to begin for the libel and invasion of privacy suit. Former soap star sues Soap opera star Kaye Stevens has sued Oriole Homes Corp.

The suit, filed in Broward Circuit Court on Thursday, seeks damages of more than $1 -million. Oriole president Mark Levy declined to comment on the suit. Soap fans may remember Stevens as Jeri Clayton in Days of our Lives. 0HI0TE: Allen sees son in Ireland Film director Woody Allen flew to Dublin on Friday and took his 5-year-old son Satchel, who was in Ireland with his mother Mia Farrow, to the zoo. They walked hand-in-hand through the park and fed a tortoise but refused to speak to reporters and photographers who followed them. Farrow is in Ireland filming the comedy Widow's Peak with Joan Plo-wright and Natasha Richardson. Farrow recently was awarded custody of the couple's children in a bitter case that centered on Allen's affair with Farrow's adopted daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, 22. 1 II Installation i LIGHTING AT I FACTORY PRICES All Brands Up lo fesefiSKgv 75 Off Mfg.
