3. Drake's Rastauranl, Opera Block. 9dt Protecting Fruit this heading in last week's paper I noticed an "item" about the driving of nails in fruit trees to keep away and insects. Now, Mr. Editor, please don't let the people do this; you say it can do no harm, but does the tree a great deal of good--that is, if it is all O.

K. Don't let the people do it, because I Bay so. I say it will damage the trees and make an accessable place for borers to enter the bark, and it will do no good whatever. The sap ascends only through millions of cells in sap wood, meeting the air and changes by evaporation and chemical action to growth, which is only laid on by descending sap between the bark and wood. Again, a tree can only take in its proper nourishment through its rootlets, and not through the body 1 It is like feeding a man mush through his ribs.

Starne, in which the defendant was convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to the penitentiary for one year, was ably argued in circuit court yesterday afternoon by Thomas Lee, and Hon. A. B. Bunn, in support of the motion, and State's Attorney Bucking- hum in opposition. At the conclusion of argument the court ruled in favor of the motion, and decided a a new should bo had.

This case, on its trial, created a great deal of interest, especially amoos the neighbors of the parties. The matter will, of course, go over to the next term of court when the public will be treated to another dose of the scandal. The defendant Tan required to give hail ia the sum of $1,000, which we understand was furnished this morning, and Starne released from custody. 8-ltd Simmon's Slocum'g call particular attention to the advertisement of this magnificent troupe which appears iu our columns to-day, and give below what the Baltimore Sun sayi cf their performances in that city. Burnt Cork Opera, combined with sparkling negro minstrel witticisms, songs, dances and sketches, proved effective in erowding the opera house last night to see Simmons Slocum's Minstrels. The female impersonator, W. Henry Rice, in his burlesque operatic selections, was excellent, his actions, dress and voice betokening the fair sei, until he would, in loud, stentorian tones betray himself. He was recalled several times.

Thatcher, Simmons, Welch, Rice and Slocum, in the concluding farce ef the "Two Tramps," were very funny. The wind-up, where the trained dog "Fan" seizes Thatcher, exciting in the extreme, the dog seeming to act his part as intelligently as the men. The entire performance was far above that of a majority of what are known as flrst-elass troupes, and their re-appearance in Easton, which is promised at no very distant day, will fill the opera house from "pit to dome." If you hear a man discourse fluently Htnry W. Waggoner, went to Springfield by the noon train to witness the Senatorial contest. Phantom Friday of this week Prof.
