"My best score in a long time, maybe 10 years," said Watson, who will play the North course today under the format that has the 156-man field playing one round on each course before the field is cut for the final two rounds at the South. Watson credited a small adjustment in his swing and some work with veteran Lanny Wadkins in Hawaii last week with his change in fortunes. "Lanny said I might have a chance to win some tournaments the way I'm swinging," Watson said. "Obviously, I hope I can continue." Watson said he made an adjustment in his swing "a little more upright, more like I used to swing," he said after missing the cut in the Hawaiian Open in his last start.

Steve Pate had a 64 on the North course and said he was surprised to shoot 8 under par "and have three guys in front of me. SAN DIEGO The scoreboard showed Tom Watson, Robert Wrenn and Brad Faxon in a tie after the first round of the $l-million Buick Invitational of California. But that is not an accurate picture of the situation, Wrenn and Faxon agreed Thursday after they had matched 63s on the North course at Torrey Pines. They nominated Watson as the leader by two, possibly three shots. "Wow," Faxon breathed when he caught sight of Watson's score, Associated Preit also a 63.

The difference is that the five-time British Open champion had his 9-under-par effort on the longer, more difficult South course. "Easily a 2-3 shot difference" between the two courses, Wrenn said. Acres was stopped on Inter-state 4 by Orlando police MBA about 2:30 a-m-.

six hours after the Magic hosted the Chicago Bulls. He was booked at 4 a.m. and released at 10:30 a.m, according to Magic spokesman Alex Martins. Martins met with reporters late Thursday and apologized on Acres' behalf to the Orlando community. He also said Acres would be in uniform tonight when the Magic hosts the Detroit Pistons.

Acres' first court appearance was scheduled for March 11. Thursday's game Cavaliers 92, Knicks 89: Larry Nance's left-handed tip-in with 19 seconds left capped a fourth-quarter rally that lifted Cleveland over New York. The victory kept the Cavaliers (34-17) ahead of the Knicks (33-19) in the race for second place in the Eastern Conference. The two teams could meet in the second round of the playoffs, when the team with the best record would get homecourt advantage. Clippers smoke Lakers Suddenly, the magic in Los Angeles appears to have moved across town.

It's been four seasons since the Lakers won an NBA title and two since they've won a Pacific Division title. And after being routed 125-94 Wednesday night by the Los Angeles Clippers, they could lose the city championship for the first time. The series is split at 2-2, and the teams meet one last time in the final regular-season game. The Clippers have won five straight under new coach Larry Brown, they're tied with Seattle for fifth place in the Pacific, two games behind the Lakers, and Wednesday's win was the Clippers' most lopsided triumph over the Lakers. He said an ambulance was called to the Four Seasons Hotel, a downtown hotel where Yawkey lives, at about 5:30 p.m. Yawkey is the widow of the former Thomas A.

Yawkey, who owned the Red Sox for 43 years until his death in 1976. She never has granted a news interview but is popular with the players. During her tenure as principal owner, she has attended every game in Fenway Park, watching from her private box on the roof. Yawkey became a one-third owner in 1978, dividing the team's stock with Haywood Sullivan and Buddy LeRoux. She later bought out LeRoux to secure a controlling interest in the team.

Yawkey serves on the board of directors at the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, N.Y. She built a wing of the tourist attraction and dedicated it to her husband's memory. Palmeiro becomes super-rich Ranger NEW YORK First baseman Rafael Palmeiro scored the second arbitration victory against the Texas Rangers in two days, receiving a salary instead of Arbitrator Gil Vernon made the decision a day after hearing the case and a day after Rangers outfielder Ruben Sierra was granted a record $5-million. Just minutes before his hearing was to begin, Mike Henneman and Detroit settled at $2,437,500, a raise of $1,337,500. Lee Guetterman and the New York Yankees agreed at a raise of $550,000.
