FRED CLARKE. WHO PILOTS THE PITTSBURGS TO HHAMPTONSHTP. THE MIGHTY HANS WAGNER One need not necessarily consider basebill statistics to figure out. why the Pittsburg club leads the National league and practically has the pennant won. The best examples of inside basuball seen this season have been put up by the Pirates.

Manager; Fred Clarke, a past master at this tial quality In has proved himself oiie of the greatest leaders in Ihe history of the game. Clarke developed and made championship timber of several players who looked at the beginning ofthe season no bcttctf than third raters. He Is a fighter, headier probably than nearly aay other manager today, and as a guesser he has displayed jihe rarest skill In hair raising contests with the Cuba and Giants. Clarke has been manager of the Pittsburg-club for ten years. In that time the club hhs never finished out of the first division, winning three consecutive pennants, finishing acofjd three times, third once, fourth once and being tidj with New York for second place last season.

The pennant of 1909 on top of such a record as that! places Clarke in a position alone as a baseball leadt-H. The Pirates lead In club batting, are supreme In fielding and are far In the lead in jthe matter Of long hits. Mighty Hans Wagner, though closely pressed by Seymour, of New Yorks, leades the batters of the league, as usual. Clarke and Lfach are among the ten best sluggers. In the pitching department the Pittsburgs also excel.

R. I. Will Lay New Tracks and Run Motor Cars. Plalnvlllle. Sept.

24. Alarmed at the seemingly certain Invasion of its territory by the construction of an electric line between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, preitaration for wrilrh is being mohed. the Grand Ran-lls Indiana Railway Co. has this week given evidence of Its Intentfon to fight fire with fire. A survey is qnietly being made for, another road, nearly parallel with the present road, which will be used almost exclusively for freight service, thus permitting the use ofthe main line for both fast trains and local service on regular interurban schedules.

The road Is now testing a steam motor-driven car for this service, and will also consider the use of gasoline and ltotric cars, hut the steam car is giving an exceptionally satisfactory tset' It would be Impossible for the road to Increase Its present train service materially as long as both the passenger and freight trains are handled on a single track so either a double track or an independent freight line is necessary. The new route takes a southeasterly direction from Wayland. nearly touching the shores of Gun lake, to which point the summer traffic would be large, as the pouplar resort Is at present nearly eight miles from the railroad.
