-With a report that shook everything In the vicinity of the lower Detroit river. 12 tons of dynamite stored on an artificial island, near Stony island, frlo1ed ai 4:30 o'clock Wednesday eftCTioen. No lives were lost, but Harry Rogers. 32 Montcalm street east, and Theodore H.f Perry, 4T7 Fourth avenue, of Detroit (who were in a sailboat nearby, had a miraculous escape from Instant death. In the Canadian town of Amherstburg, opposite west Detroit, buildings were rocked and hun dreds of windows broken.

The populace, with viMons of the 'Frisco earthquake horror, rushed to their homes In frensy. The dynamite was the property of Dunbar A Sullivan, dredging contractors, and wpa srored In a shanty, on the Island, to be used, as neededj for blasting rock In the ship Didn't Know What Was Up. Rogers and Perry were the or.ly ones in the Ticinlty when the dynamite let go. Both aay rhey did net know what I had happened until they found themselves floating in the water some dlttance from the island. Both Rogers and Perry were practically nude when resetted from the water by James Lafayette, a farm hand, employed by Edwin Henderson, at his summer home on Grosse Isle.

Their bruised and bleeding forms presented a ghastly sight. shirts wer torn to ribbons. The men were taken to Amberstburg. When seen by a reporter last nisfct, both men were awathed in bandag-'s, and were resting comfortably in the Lake View hotel. They will probably be out in a few days.

A pair of trousers belonging to one of them was later picked up In the water near the scene of the explosion. Some Theories. Amherstburg people, tug captains and dredgemen have varidus theories as to the cause of the explosion. One Ik that Rogers and Perry were bathing, and while tking a rest on the island Indulged in a cigarette' smote." and carelessly threw a lighted butt near the shanty, setting fire to the building. is also alleged the boat the two men were cruising In contained a rifle and a 38-calibre revolver, and that the men were Indulging In target practice, shooting at the dynamite shanty.

All stories Rogers and Perry consistently and persistently deny. It isi asserted positively that amoks was ''seen Issuing from the shahty Just prior" to the explosion. Rogers and Perry say they were on their way to the Monroe yacht races. Perry is ms.rrled. Endow Chair at Alma.
