The victory moved Toronto within one game of the division-leading Red Sox.

It was only the second time the Blue Jays have beaten the Red Sox in seven games this season. Wilson began the winning rally with a single to right, his third hit of the game, and took third when Joe Hesketh (0-1) threw a pickoff attempt down the rightfield line. Tony Fernandez was walked intentionally and Jeff Gray relieved Hesketh. With the infield in, Grub-er broke his bat on a 1-1 pitch and grounded softly to third baseman Wade Boggs. But Wilson, running on contact, beat the throw to the plate, sliding in just ahead of Tony Pena's tag.

The game was played in front of a SkyDome regular-season record crowd of 49,918. AP Toronto's Kelly Gruber goes for first and Boston's Tony Pena goes for the ball he dropped on a third strike. He got Gruber. MILWAUKEE NEW YORK two and struck out five. The Mariners have scored 14 runs in his 10 defeats and just 58 in their last 21 games, an average of 2.8 per game.

Associated Press PITTSBURGH Bobby Bon-illa hit a grand slam to cap Pittsburgh's six-run fifth inning and Barry Bonds added a two-run homer as the Pirates won their fifth straight over Cincinnati, beating the Reds 9-3 Thursday night in a battle of National League division leaders. Zane Smith (9-7) gave up two runs in 6V3 innings to win his third in a row since being traded to Pittsburgh on Aug 8. The Pirates have won 10 of their last 12, including their first four-game sweep ever in Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium last weekend. Don Slaught doubled, tripled and had an RBI as the Pirates improved to 44-20 against the NL West. Rookie Chris Hammond (0-2), losing to the Pirates for the second time in five days, didn't make it out of the fifth after allowing just one hit in the first four innings.

the runner up and manager Lou Piniella lifted Hammond after Gary Redus walked. Tim Layana walked Bell to load the bases, then walked Van Slyke on four straight pitches to force in the go-ahead run. Layana got two quick strikes, then ran the count full before Bonilla hit a drive off the leftfield stands for his 29th homer and the Pirates' fifth grand slam this season. He also hit a grand slam against Atlanta on May 18. Bonilla has four home runs and nine RBIs in his last five games against Cincinnati.

Tino Martinez to stay at first, O'Brien to go to right Hoffman stifles Dunedin; St. Petersburg into third Box scores, 2C By JOHN HOLECEK Timet Correspondent SEATTLE Who's on first? For the time being, it will be rookie Tino Martinez.

Pete O'Brien, signed to a four-year, free-agent contract by the Mariners during the off-season, will be moved to the outfield. "We want his bat in the lineup and leftfield is a viable option to do that," Mariners manager Jim Lefebvre said. "I played three quarters of the year at Triple-A in 1982 in leftfield," O'Brien said. "I can play there. My first major-league game was in left in Comiskey Park.

It's just a matter of getting used to it again." Jeffrey Leonard has been playing leftfield most of the season. He leads the team in RBI with 65. Martinez, 22, an All-American at the University of Tampa and Seattle's first-round draft choice in 1988, was called up from Triple-A Calgary this week to fill in for the injured O'Brien, who missed four games with a swollen left hand. Martinez was batting .333 (5-for-15) with two RBI after Thursday night's loss at Kansas City. O'Brien, 32, took a .208 average into the game, with four home runs Gold Glove in centerfield in each of the past four seasons has been moved in an effort to prolong his career.

It is not a change designed to protect a player past his prime. Puckett is just 29, but he acknowledges, "I can't play out there forever. I've got to hand it over to someone." That someone might be Shane Mack, who played center for the three games and who, manager Tom Kelly said, "is going to cover a lot more ground." Around the bases 4 Giants right-hander Jose Alvarez, who has been on the disabled list all season, underwent elbow surgery Thursday in Los Angeles and will wait at least six months before he can throw again. Red Sox pitcher John Dopson is scheduled for surgery Monday to have bone chips removed from his right elbow. Reds outfielder Eric Davis, who has been unable to lift his batting average above .230, was expected to wear contact lenses for the first time in Thursday night's game.

Compiled from Associated Press reports. BASEBALL INSIDER and 22 RBI in 264 at-bats. He missed 45 games this season with a broken thumb. Brewer suspensions upheld NEW YORK The suspensions of Milwaukee Brewers players B.J. Surhoff, Gary Sheffield and Mike Felder were upheld Thursday by AL president Bobby Brown.

Each player was suspended for three games in connection with a Milwaukee-Seattle confrontation June 30. All three stated their cases to Brown on Thursday. Surhoff's suspension began Thursday night. Felder's begins Monday and Sheffield's starts Aug. 31.

Puckett drifts to right In the box scores it looks like a typographical error. On the field it appears to be an illusion. No, that indeed has been Kirby Puckett in rightfield for the Minnesota Twins for three games. The winner of the American League Dunedin opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when third baseman Mark Young walked to lead off, advanced to second on Todd Provence's groundout and scored on Greg O'Halloran's double. The Cardinals tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after Joe Federico walked and advanced to second on Tripp Cromer's single.

Catcher Tim Redman singled off pitcher Rick Trlicek's leg, allowing Federico to score. Trlicek, who was pitching effectively, had to leave the game. Charlotte 10, Clearwater 1 PORT CHARLOTTE First baseman Darren Niethammer went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI as the Charlotte Rangers routed the Clearwater Phillies 10-1 Thursday night at Charlotte County Stadium. The Rangers had 14 hits, including two by second baseman Luke Sable. ST.

PETERSBURG Paced by Rich Hoffman's pitching, the St. Petersburg Cardinals defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays 5-1 Thursday night at Al Lang Stadium. Hoffman (5-8) allowed one run on three hits over seven innings while striking out four and walking two. David Grimes came in for Hoffman in the eighth and kept the Blue Jays from fSL mounting a threat as he allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings. Tim Redman had the hot bat for the Cardinals, picking up two of the team's five hits and driving in one run.

He scored another. With the win, the Cardinals (27-34) have moved from last place to third in just two days, jumping past the Blue Jays and the Clearwater Phillies in the West Division..
