SBC moderates to meet Aug. 23 HOUSTON Southern Baptist Convention moderates have called a national meeting Aug. 23-25 to consider what to do about the fundamentalist wing gaining full-scale control of the denomination.

The gathering in Atlanta was called to explore ways to uphold principles that differ with the new fundamentalist directions and to consider alternate means for channeling giving to missions. "I think we are ripe for God to use us in creating something new and visionary and historic," said the Rev. Daniel Vestal of Dunwoody, the moderates' defeated candidate in June for the denominational presidency. Black Baptist leader lures SBC dissidents LOUISVILLE, Ky. The president of the predominantly black Progressive National Baptist Convention has invited Southern Baptists "who are disillusioned with the far right" in their denomination to join his.

The offer was made here Aug. 6 by the Rev. Fred C. Lofton, president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, at a news conference at the beginning of the five-day national convention of his 1.8-million-member church body. Compiled from reports by AMY WELTY of the Times staff and news services' reports linked romantically with former Archbishop Eugene Marino and a local pastor, both of whom resigned when the relationships were revealed.

The purpose of the audit is to "lay to rest" any questions on improper financial arrangements between the clerics and Vicki Long, a 27-year-old former lay minister and singer, according to an archdiocesan spokesman. Archdiocesan officials disclosed last week that Archbishop Marino, who cited personal and medical reasons for his July 10 resignation, in fact stepped down because of his two-year relationship with Ms. Long. The Rev. Peter Dora, director of communications for the archdiocese, said that Archbishop Marino, the first black archbishop in the history of the U.S.

church, gave Ms. Long a sum of money each month. Last weekend a priest in the archdiocese, the Rev. Michael Woods, pastor at St. Jude's Catholic Church in suburban Sandy Springs, told his congregation he had also been "intimately" involved with Vicki Long and offered to resign.

Father Woods is the third priest in Georgia to have reportedly been involved with Ms. Long. Ms. Long has made no public comments on the relationships. Christianity Day at Busch Gardens TAMPA Mt.

Advance tickets are available at fol Tough talk more church action needed to fight drugs, drug czar says U.S. drug czar William J. Bennett thinks the war against drugs begins at home, where he urges parents to use "straight, tough talk" in sending a message to their children that drug use will not be tolerated. The nation is slowly turning the corner in the drug war, but U.S.

churches need to make a stronger effort to back up the family message in the community, he said in an interview in the August edition of Columbia magazine, published by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights are a 1.5-mil-lion-member fraternal organization of lay Roman Catholic men. "I would like to see the churches be more active. I would hope we would hear more from our pulpits about this issue," he said. If drug use "isn't a sin," he said, "I don't know what is." Bennett is the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, a post he took after serving as U.S.

The Roman Catholic bishop of Richmond said one of the major reasons the diocese will not ordain married men to the permanent diaconate is because women are excluded from the office. Bishop Walter F. Sullivan, writing in a recent issue of the Catholic Virginian, states, "This diocese does not ordain deacons because we cannot ordain women deacons." He is the second U.S.

Catholic bishop in recent months to cite the controversial issue of women's role in the church as the primary reason for refusing to ordain any more men as deacons.
