He paid the price, twenty dollars, gave the girl's address and ordered it send out immediately although It lacked a fort- nignt of the merry Yuletide. But made no reply to her note of profuse thanks and he never set foot In her nouse again.

More than that he went around and told the story to all the other chaps and queered her so that she never had any luck In her own town again, although she was an attractive girl and had a train of admirers In other towns where she visited, especially after this lesson had taught her to use a little "jurisprudence" as Bill Curtis would say. Seldom, If ever. In the history of fashion have the modes in furs been as fascinating as they are this season. Soft shades of brown and gray will play a prominent part, black furs beina less worn than formerly. Smart little wraps that follow the lines of the figure Mrs.

D. R. Hite gave a dinner party for sixteen girls Saturday night In celebration of her daughter, Rose's fourteenth birthday anniversary. All the dress suits in Washburn college were in use Saturday when the Glee club had their pictures taken for the season of 1908. The club will give Its first concert at the college after Christmas and may go on tour.

Mr. Henry Fay Look, the new member of the music school faculty. Is the director of the club which Is unusually good this year. A Christmas grafter, who had a suitor who had been calling, taking her to plays and dances and things for a few months, fixed it up with sister to "bone" him for a Christmas present for her. One day some time before Christmas the sister met her intended victim down town and they strolled along together until they came to- a fashionable jeweler's when she ejaculated, as if the idea had just occurred to her, Mr.

Ezymony! I know you want me to tell you what sister wants for Christmas. She's Perfectly Crazy about that umbrella in the window." A shade of astonishment passed over Mr. Ezymony's face but he recovered himself Immediately and said: "Is she? Let's go in and look at It," and he lea her into the shop where he said to the salesman. "I want that umbrella in the window. Despite the inclement weather of Saturday afternoon over one hundred and twenty-five guests were -entertain ed in the home of Mrs. George Parkhurst, the mecca of our classic music lovers. The object of the oc casion was to afford to the friends and admirers of Miss Grace Keefer an opportunity to hear her in sone recital, Miss Keefer gave her programme with an ease and grace which delighted her hearers, not the least charms of her voice being the precision of her ex cution and the distinctness of her enunciation. The company was usher, ed into the music room on the third floor by Miss Keefer's fellow members of the Crescendo club, who also served punch in the reception hall on the second floor after the programme. While Miss Keefer Is one of Topeka' youngest vocalists and but a two-year pupil of Mrs.

Parkhurst, her pro gramme included La Serenataf' by Tost), which Melba sang here. In Lakmo by L. Delibes, the pure lyric quality of Miss Keefer's vioce easily reached the high flat and rendered Its difficult cadenza with a bril liancy and ease which brought forth a irresistible encore and many expres sions of admiration. It is onlv fair to Topeka's standard of music and Miss Keefer to mention that the cadenza in Lakme" is an accepted test for five year pupils In eastern conservatories, including New York's, and that not more than five of our American prima. aonnas render it successfully.

Miss Keefer Introduced several new songs, among them a group of Salter numbers and "Shena Van" by Beach. Neath the Apple Trees' by Bruno Huhn and "Spring's Approach" by Halle. The varied range. of the pro-grame furnished ample field for voice of sweet, birdlike quality, and Topeka is glad to recognize- Miss Keefer as belonging to her coterie of accepted soloists. The duet by Mrs.

Parkhurst and Miss Keefer was especially pleasing and heartily applauded. For encore Miss Frizell gave by Binding, and Miss Doster appeared the second time and played "Badine," also by Gabriel Marie. Miss Wilcox was accompanist for Miss Doster and Mrs. Robert D. Garver played the other accompaniments.

The Washburn football team of 1907 (never defeated) was photographed Saturday the best looking: bunch as well as the best players la the Missouri valley. A Topeka woman has the habit of "stashing" a few cigars on her bus-band out of every box he buys in order' to be sure of having them for unexpected visitors. Thomas, a negro lawyer, has "put his foot in it." It is probable that this Senegambian ex pounder of Blackstone may be prose cuted on a charge of "compounding a felony. The disturbance has arisen over the peculiar methods used by the negro lawyer in -collecting money. About a year ago, Thomas loaned $50 to a labor er named Lon Fleming, at pawnbroker's Interest 10 per cent per month. As security Fleming mentioned a mule and harness which he was alleged to have owned. A month ago E.

N. Miller claimed the property which Fleming gave as security, then Thomas hunted up Fleming, who was in Kansas City, and had him arrested for obtaining money under false pretense. The victim was taken away from his wife and four children, who were left destitute, and locked uo in Jail at Topeka. This occurred November 28, and his trial has been out off from time to time. Ihe ram was taken by Judge Joseph Reed as a matter of charity to the family of the prisoner.

When Fleming's trial came un last Saturday Judge- Reed proved that Thomas naa enterea into an agreement wnn me prisoner 10 secure his release, providing he turned over all nis personal enects. ii is claimed that Thomas violated this agreement when he found out that the costs would exceed the valuation of the canty property of the defendant. It was also shown in tne trial that the money loaned belonged to W. E. Seguine, a "high rate' loan agent, and that Thomas was therefore no loser.

and was simply working a collection scheme for Seguine. Therefore Fleming was discharged, and the costs of the case taxed to Thomas, the prosecuting witness.
