The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first on an single by Casey Waller that scored Joe Urbon.

Viola (12-3) pitched a five-hitter for his third shutout of the season.

The Mets have won 20 of 23 overall and 11 of the last 12 at home. Houston has lost 15 of 16 on the road. Strawberry made it 5-0 with his 18th homer in the third, but that was nothing compared to what he did in the fifth. Leading off against Xavier Hernandez, Strawberry hit one of the longest home runs in Shea Stadium history, a high, majestic drive that struck nearly 30 feet up on the scoreboard in right-center-field. The distance was estimated at about 450 feet from home plate.

"I told him my desire is to do just one job," McKeon said. "Manager was never a longtime goal of mine, anyway. I think a lot of people realized I wouldn't be managing here after this season.

"I was happy to help out and I always said when a time came that I didn't feel like managing, I'd let them know." Werner did not make any promises to McKeon during their meeting Monday, but he said he would evaluate the situation and consider the request. "Obviously, things are not going like we want, but we don't want to be forced into making a decision, either," Werner said. "We'll see what happens and go from there." McKeon's decision comes on the heels of the Padres' worst slump of the season, in which they've lost 14 of their last 19 games. Around the bases Three St. Louis Cardinals players have rejected an offer to settle disorderly conduct charges against them in Covington, Ky.

Lawyer Jim Kidney said Cardinals catcher Tom Pagnozzi and pitchers Frank DiPino and Greg Mathews rejected the offer because they want their names cleared. The Orioles recalled first baseman Sam Horn and right-handed pitcher Ben McDonald from Rochester of the International League and optioned outfielder Donell Nixon to the same club. The Oakland Athletics activated pitcher Reggie Harris from the disabled list Tuesday and sent outfielder Doug Jennings to their Class AAA farm club at Tacoma. The San Diego Padres recalled outfielder Thomas Howard from Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League and optioned outfielder Gerald Clark to the same club. Howard was the Padres' No.

Don Mattingly's sore and stiff back showed improvement Tuesday, but the Yankees' first baseman won't attempt a return to the lineup until Friday and may be asked to wait until after the three-day break for Tuesday's All-Star Game. Mattingly, who suffered spasms and stiffness in an early hitting session Monday at Royals Stadium, took several hours of treatment Tuesday and then missed his second game in succession Tuesday night.

Manager Stump Merrill left open the chance Mattingly might not be put in the lineup until July 12, the Yankees' first game after the All-Star Game. 1.
