Juan Gonzalez and Jim Thome homered on consecutive pitches as the Cleveland Indians rallied shortly after a fog delay Friday night for a 4-3 win nvpr rho I I Baltimore Orioles.

A dense, fast- raovini fog swirled in off Lake Erie in the fifth inning and stopped play for eight minutes before the Indians stormed back from a 3-0 deficit. They scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning without getting a hit as Gonzalez walked with the bases loaded. Ricardo Rincon (1-0) relieved starter Dave Burba and got the win, striking out the only batter he faced. Paul Shuey worked the eighth and Bob Wickman closed for his first save. The Indians used four walks and a sacrifice to take a 4-3 lead in the seventh.

Baltimore starter Jose Mercedes (0-1) walked Wil Cordero and Einar Diaz sacrificed pinch-runner Jolbert Cabrera over. B.J. Ryan came on and walked pinch-hitter Marty Cordova, and one out Mutombo PHILADELPHIA (AP) Allen Iverson walked into the news conference, looked straight at the camera, tipped his new hat and said, "There's more to come, baby!" For the first time in more than a the Philadelphia 76ers can call themselves division champions. Dikembe Mutombo had a season-high 27 points and 13 rebounds and Eric Snow added 15 points as the Sixers, despite playing without Iverson and Aaron McKie, wrapped up the Atlantic Division title Golf ly visible from the press box. Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove came out to complain and the umpires delayed the game for eight minutes in the sixth.

Unfortunately for Hargrove, he had a clear view of the shots hit by Gonzalez and Thome off Mercedes in the bottom of the inning. At one point, the fog was so thick and blowing in so fast that Orioles center fielder Melvin Mora was bare leads 76ers with a 96-88 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. Philadelphia hadn't won a division title since 1989-90. "The progress we've made has been pretty darn good," coach Larry Brown said before Iverson interrupted him with his impromptu declaration. "It's a good feeling.

We've accomplished a lot." Iverson missed his second consecutive game and McKie missed his fifth straight. Backup center Matt Geiger left the Locker Room past Cavs game at halftime with swelling in his left knee. Despite a makeshift lineup, the Sixers led the entire game until Andre Miller made two free throws to give the Cavaliers a 58-57 advantage midway through the third quarter. Philadelphia then scored eight straight, ignited by a slam from Mutombo, to take a 65-58 lead. An alley-oop slam by Jumaine Jones capped a 13-2 run and made it 70-60 with 2:23 left in the third.

Cleveland didn't get any closer than seven the rest of the way. PGA, The Masters AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Scores after the second round of The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club, Yardage: 6.9B5. Miscellaneous LOS ANGELES (AP) Shane Battier, who led Duke to its first NCAA championship since 1992, capped an outstanding college career Friday, winning the 25th John R.

Wooden Award as the male player of the year. Battier, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Birmingham, was previously honored as The Associated Press player of the year and Naismith Award winner, and was chosen the outstanding player in the Final Four for his efforts in victories over Maryland and Arizona. "I'm very honored to receive this award," Battier said. "Iast year, Coach Wooden told me if he was still coaching, I'd be a player he'd like to coach. That's the ultimate compliment.

"Every goal I've set for the last four years, I have reached. To win the Wooden Award after winning the national championship is the perfect ending to my career. It's fitting it happened near Hollywood." Battier, who averaged 19.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 2.1 steals and 2.3 blocked shots this season to lead Duke to a 35-4 record, was a runaway winner, collecting 4,892 points from the more than media members and basketball experts who participated. Jason Williams, Battier's teammate at Duke, finished second with 3,764 points, followed by Joseph Forte of North Carolina with Casey Jacobsen of Stanford with Troy Murphy of Notre Dame with Tayshaun Prince of Kentucky with Charlie Bell of Michigan State with Frank Williams of Illinois with Gisey Gilvary of Gonzaga with 977; and Jarron Collins of Stanford with 939. Battier was the only senior among the top five Murphy is a junior, and Williams, Jacobsen and Forte are sophomores.

Except for Forte, the five finalists all attended the ceremony, as did coaches Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, Mike Brey of Notre Dame, Mike Montgomery of Stanford and Matt Dohcrty of North Carolina..
