Starter Russ Christopher was the victor. The Chicago Cubs knocked the Brooklyn Dodgers out of the National league lead, a fact almost overlooked in the Feller furor, walking in a run In the sJPtT IOWA fishermen had a "double-header" Wednesday with the opening of the trout season and bullheads becoming legal in all state-owned artificial lakes. Probably the most popular bait for both species, at least at this season of the year, is garden hackle the parlor term for angleworms. But the method of using them is quite different. While angling purists spurn the use of anything but artificial flies, the worm is probably the roost effective of the live baits in fishing trout.

The worm, however, is an earth creature and gets in water only by accident. When in water the worm is at the mercy of the currents of a stream, or if in still water is able only to crawl along the bottom. Hence it should be fished as naturally as possibly so that it will seem detached from the line. It should be given a little slack so that it will drift in a natural manner. A fine leader, and tiny hook should be used with only a split shot, well up on the leader, to keep the bait submerged.

The worm should be threaded loosely through his middle section, with both ends dangling. -For those who insist on using artificial flies, even at the opening of the season when competition is great 'and little solitude can actually be found, a black gnat with a small spinner ahead of it has been found effective. Of course other com binations will do the work too. The tyro should know that the trout does not require scaling in preparing it for the pan. While trout do have scales they are so minute that they cannot be detected in eating and are practically impossible to remove anyway.

The bullhead fisherman finds the worm most effective for his fishing, but he uses it with less finesse Heavier tackle is used throughout and the worm is threaded on the large hook in virtual gobs. Jt is fished on or near the bottom, for the bullhead is a bottom feeder. But a word of caution should be given bullhead fishermen in artificial lakes for the month of May. Those lakes also are heavily stocked with bluegills and bass and they relish worms. Since thoH species do not become legal catch until June 1 care should be taken in removing any that are inadvertently hooked while fishing for bullheads.

Incidentally if you find the fish has swallowed the hook down so sit IN THE a RIES iSST" By Jack Hand. (Associated Pr Bport Writer.) Bobby Feller's brilliant no-hit, no-run Job against the New York Yankees should still once and for all the springtime rumors that Rapid Robert had lost his fast one. "My fast ball was my best pitch all the way," Feller said in the clubhouse after the ball game, "but I also used a lot of curves and sliders." Slightly Peeved? Feller was amused and slightly peeved about reports he was slipping" so he picked the big town and the slugging Yankees for his premium effort, working out of turn with only three days rest to prove his point. The Van Meter, fireball ace figured he could get the Tribe off on the right foot in their first eastern trip of the season if he could snap back with a good effort after losing two of his first three. If ever a team had an inspiration the Indians have one now.

Wait Awhile. Before the game, Manager Lou Boudreau shrugged off questions about Feller with a quiet, "wait until after the game and then talk to me." After the game, nobody had to ask a word. Just as he said months ago in Clearwater, Feller is after Hal Newhouser's strikeout championship this season. He now has 39 victims in four games, counting the 11 he whiffed in Tuesday's 1-0 Cleveland victory over New York. Feller's sterling job overshad owed a fine effort by Joe Dobson of the Boston Red Sox who handed Detroit's Hal Newhouser bis first setback, 4-0.

It lengthened the Boston lead to two full games. Dobson, a former G.L, allowed only three hits in racking up his third straight decision. Kay scarbrougn, turned in a winning performance for Washington, outpointing Ed Lopat of Chicago, 3-2.
