J. H. Laster left Wednesday for Chattanooga, in response to urgent solicitations to assist in a protracted meeting there. Miss Maud Cox, of Attaila, a finished musician, who has been teaching music in Mississippi for some time, has returned home. The Ladies' Aid society of the M.

E. church, is making preparations for an "old-time which will be presented in the near future. A beautiful program consisting of I songs, recitations, was renaerea by the children of the Methodist Sunday school at the Children's day service Sunday morning. The store of Russell Bros. A was kept closed several hours Thursday as a mark of respect for Mrs.

A. B. Russell, of whose funeral services were held on that day. The whistle of the Attaila furnace blew for the first time at noon Wednesday. Although this whistle had not been heard before in seven years, its sound was familiar to many of our citizens.

Edgar Lee, who went to DeKalb, Texas, and accepted a salesmanship with Crump Bros, at that place, two months ago, lias returned to Attaila and accepted his former position with the Attaila Hardware Co. Mrs. Sam Stepleton, daughter of John Hood, of near Attaila, died on the 10th, and was buried at Shilob on the 18th. Mr. Hood has a Bon, George, who has also been expected to die for some time of meningitis.

Dr. M. E. Dozier has discovered a very valuable rock quarry at Moun-tainboro, the rocks being of various sizes and thicknesses, but the thickness being uniform, which make them particularly useful for paving purposes. A protracted meeting has been in progress at the Baptist church here this week.

Rev. J. A. May. of Walnut Grove, and Prof.

E. B. Moore, vocalist, of Hokes Bluff, are assisting the local clergy and the iocal vocal talent in the meeting. B. T.

Walsh, of New Orleans, the organizer and one of the incorporators of the Attaila Iron and Steel in 1887, and to whose untiring efforts in the industrial interest of Attaila the furnace here is to be credited, was in the city Wednesday on business. Levi M. Hutchens, of Snead, Blount county, a confederate soldier wno lost an arm in a battle at Franklin, was in town Tuesday perfect ing his proof of service to get his name on the state pension rolls. Mr. Hutchen's former home was on Chan dler mountain, in St.

Clair county. where he used to be an extensive fruit grower. Attaila has an extraordinary bright boy in the person of Walter Bearden Walter went out of the cradle, so to speak, into the telegraph omce, studied telegraphy, soon mastered it, and now he is one of the most proh cient disciples of Samuel Finley Breese Morse, on the entire SoutherD system, and he is still a knee pants boy. His aptness and constancy are appreciated and recognized by the high officials of the road in whoee em ploy waiter nas oeen ior quuc awhile, as an evidence of which the superintendent kept him in his office in liirminsnam tor some time, ana will doubtless keep the way clear to accelerate waiter piuwuiiuu.
