Frm the N. Picayune, May 12 THK CREVASSES AT NEW ORLEANS. The Sauve Crevatte. After four days' absence from the scene of the bauve crevasse, we again weiit opto it yesterday. We found the liue of piling about completed across the breach, though the pile-driving machines were still at work.

Tbe extension of the line of piles struck us as amongst the most favorable signs of success in the efforts to stop the break that we discovered, a number ot bands are engsged in sinking bags of earth against the outside of the piles, wnicn, ii tne pues can be made to stand, must in the course ot a lew days cbeok tbe overllow. Even if the work already done at this crevasse should stand, it is our opinion that the flood through the Dreacn cannot be materially arrested, at shortest, uuder two days. If it should give way. however, of course all will have to be done over again, and in tbe meantime tne city must become thoroughly inundated. While at the crevasse we were told that the water where the piles are driven was in somo places thirteen feet in depth, where three days before it was but two.

It appears that somo of ths planters above the ore- vasi-e have become discouraged, and withdrawn their forces from working. This we are informed was the case with Mr. Miller Kenner and Mr. Butler kenner. 1 heir negroes, who bad been several days workine at the crevasse, bad been taken awjy.

Mr. Trudeau is tbe only planter above who continues his force at the break. lie has thirty acres of cane under water, which is of course ruined. Besides this, be has lost two of his negroes from cholera, who were exposed to laoor in tne water, riesiues these none ot bis servants have uied of tho disease during the whole sea son. One or two of the piles in the lowsr Dart of the line gave way while we were present yesterday.

Our at tention was called to the lact by several gentlemen who witnessed it. The water in the fields of Mr. Trudeau and Mr. Sauve, near the crevasse, is beginning- to recede slightly owing, wo presume, to ths rapidity with wnicn it now runs on mrougn tne numerous outlets and channels in and near the oity. which is much greater than it was for some days after the levee was broken.

It appeared to us that the rush of water through the breach was nearly, if not quite, as rapid and alarming as when we first visited the crevasses, though we viewed it from adiffereut point yesterday. just as we were leaving about halt -past 3 clock P. M. 'wo learned that it was the intention of the white hands to quit working last night and come to the oity, they having been told that such was the de mand lor men to check the inroads of tbe flood upon the town, that they could command from $2 50 to $3 per day. This may bo true or not.

We give it as ws heard it. Foriier Crevatte. We also had a vie of the For tier crevasse, a short distanoe below, on the otDOsite side of the river. It has been abandoned, and the tur bulent waters are rushing in destructive torrents, without a bound to their wildness, over tens of thousands of acres of devoted lands. Unfavorable as is the report we have above riven of the prospect of closing tbe crevasse, it is not to be concealed that in the opinion of very competent gen tlemen.

we have denrerialeri the danirer tn ha annre. bended, and given too favorable an account of the tirofirress rjf the work. Wnrs en miKliah nil th. letters we have received from the crevasse, and other representations in regard to it, we should alarm our readers. But some ot the reports in circulation last evening that the work of the past week around tbe gorge had all been carried away before 5 o'clock, P.

we know to be unfounded. In any respect, th condition of things is bad enough, aad demands tbe nneeasing vigilance ef the public authorities. The Crevatte at the Englith Tarn. We again visited this crevasse yesterday afternoon, and found that but little progress had been made towards stopping the breach. The whole country around presents a scene of devastati'jn.

to smltmnlits The breach is now about one hundred and feet in width, and through it is flowing a volume of water about five feet in depth, with a full of four or five feet, giving it great force, and forming a miniature cataract. The levee is gradually srivine wav at each end of the crevasse, and the volume of water will be much larger before the new levee can be completed is ia uuw DHimsicu dj tnose wno nave charge of the operations that the new work will be anmnlatjiH in five days, if no accident occurs but in the opinion of omcrs, a weea at least wm elapse beiore this desira- oie result can ne attained. 1 he progress of the work ia necessarily slow, rue driver cannot be used to advantage, and consequently the piles or pickets have to be driven by hand. Tbe earth to fill in with bat to be carried some twenty rods by hand, andalon? a very narrow levee, which is constantly so thronged witn negroes, engagea in tne tna they make but little headway. The new levee which is being made about a hundred feet inside the old one.

will be abont three hundred feet in length, and not one hundred feet is yet completed. lfce powder magaxine being of bnck, of course withstands the fioou. which is rolling bv there with great velocity but there are two frame dwelling houses near, which hare been abandoned, and will probably be swept away. The force of the current is so great, even as far out as the new levee extends. that a man can with much cumcuiiy stand in it, and as the work progresses this oulhcolty will be more severely felt.

The principal part of tbe new levee is being built in the bed of the road, where the ground is more solid than on either side, and the piles are being driven to such a depth that they will probably withstand the force of the flood otherwise, npou bringing the works together in the centre, they would undoubtedly oe cameo away. Xhe cleared melds UDon Air- moner piantauon opposite the crevasse, presents the appearance of a lake, and we are informed that tne crops are neany all destroyed. The flood is rapidly extending acroa tne swamn and on the nlantauonl oeiow. aoinr bb immense amount ef damage. It is the opinion ef pianieis tn vicinity that, unleese tne eievesse ahould be immediately closed, nearly all the crops be tween mere ana the Balixe will be Dartiallv.il not to tally destroyed.

It was feared that the water would nse sumeiently below to destroy the levee around CoL tSeniamin's plantation hiiiMM. We heard it stated that the si imn th wva ia aait deep fourteen mile below and this being the emfs "avt do reason to doubt the realisation of mo worn auuapauoti that ar nteTtsined. The water is running over tne nortn bans ot toe canal in many places, and the inhabitants in the Seventh ward, second Municipality, ana tne rear oi ins Mnnicirjality. arc sTowinsr cxeeedinglT uneasy.

I Should th crevasse continue open for any length of 1 the swamp in the rear of these portions of tbe will fill np, and the water consequently set back tne streets. We hope that such will not be the ease, but it is contending with fear. A considerable portion the Shell Road this tide the Half-Way House is submerged, and the water is over the street oa the of the Wew Basin warehouse, nearly up to tbe of the basin. It is estimated that three hundred houses ar now surrounded by water, and the amount damage done is already very large. From the Crescent, May 13.

Good News. Very lole from the Crtvatt. Mayor Crossman received an express, at a late hour night, from the crevasse, at Mr. Sanve's planta tion, which Dnngs the cheering news that the operations were going on successfully, with every indication of those employed bting able to stop the further of water during the day (Saturday.) The messenger left the crevasse at half-past 10 last night. he stones current dunog the evening, of tne increase of the crevasse, we are pleased to learn, were destitute of truth.

Should no untoward accident occur, our citizens of the inundated districts will, in a day or two, be once more on dry land. From tbe St. Louis papers of the 12th. Lieutenant Schenck, of the United States Nary. died a short distance above Brunswick, a few days since, of cholera.

He was on his way, overland, to California. Feom thk Plains. Mr. F. Bobidoux has arrived St; Joseph from Fort Laramie.

He left that post the 24th of March, and Fort Child the 18th of pril. rle states that the grass on tbe flams was very scarce, and that it was unsafe tor the emigrants leave the settlements for at least fifteen davs. or until the middle of this month. The Pawnee and Sioux Indians were very friendly, and have no disposition to interfere with the whites, if not molested. Mr.

K. brought a large mail from Fort Child. Mortality on the Missouri River Deaths from Cholera, From Mr. Papin, clerk of the steamer Highland Mary, which arrived hut evening, have the following accounts in relation to the cholera on the Missouri. The Highland Mary left St.

Joseph on the 8th inst. Large numbers of euiiimintg were endeavoring to cross the river, preparatory to their final start for the nam, and so great was tbe rash, that tbe two terry boats, though running all day and most of the night, were inadequate to supply the demand. Five dollars. and even as high as ten, bad been paid for the trans portation of a tingle wagon and toam. 1 bo Highland Mary made several trips, and the Sacramento was then engaged in ferrying over the eager crowd.

St. Joseph and the surrounding country is represented as being literally lined with wagons, teams, and emigrants. The health of the place continued good, and but few cases of cholera had appeared. Among the few adventurers were noticed several parties from thi city. Dr.

White and family were encamped a few miles out. The Doctor had the misfortune to bo victimized, some rogues running off with two of his finest mules, and some three hundred dollars worth of accoutrements, coneisting of clothing, pistols, Arc. A general move had commenced among the mass, and all were anxious to be with the foremoet. The cholera waa still prevailing to some extent at Kansas and Independence, and both places were nearly deserted. Six or seven deaths from the disease took place at the former place on Wednesday.

Tbe steamer Mary was met above Kansas; thirty-five deaths had taken place on board since she left this city. The steamer Kansas was met at Independence, and she had lost seven or eight. At nearly erery town and village from there down, cases were reported, and much excitement prevailed. At several points at which the boat landed.no ooe came on board, and it was rumored that large numbers of the inhabitants were leaving tho river for the interior settlements. At Jefferson City, the steamer Monroe was laid up and nearly, if not quite, deserted by her passegers, officers ahd crew.

A number of deaths had occurred on boart, among whom was one ot the pilots, Mr. Joseph Ponto. '1 be other pilot had left her. The M. started from this oity, few days since, with between 150 and 2UU Mormon emigrants.

Several other boats, bound up, are reported as having had the disease on board The feteamer Ti-inour lost her steward, and tho Mary one of her engineers. The Alex. Hamilton had the disease on board, but no deaths were reported. The Highland Mury lust three passengers on her upward trip. There were quite a number attacked, but, by tbe timely use of proper remedies, all, save tbree deck passengers, recovered.

The weather was pleasant at St. Joseph on the 8th instant, and vegetation was beginning to put forth. The river was falling, with but lour feet in the chan nel to Liesinton. New Oblea.vs, Msy 12. CLE.1RED, Slip Rochester, Weeks, Liverpool.

HERRING'S (Wilder' Patent) SALAMANDER SAFE 9.

BOOKS AND PAPERS "MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED." Tbe many obstacle and difficulties which at first met the introduction of tht Salamander Safe, and the determined opposition obliged to be overcome from both prejudiced snd interested par ties, ror a long time smothered and almost paralysed tbe first attempts made to benefit the business public by putting witbin their reach the knowledge and possession ot this valuable discovery. Since then, however, it real qualities have become better known, and as the lat fires and accidental burning hav brought them more fully before the public, they have completely silenced all efforts at opposition, and thr Real Salamander now stands where it has long deserve to stand. in acknowledged superiority over every other Safe-Guard ever presented to the public. To multiply testimonials here the subscriber now deems unnecessary suffice to say that in the Thirty-One instance in whieh these sale have been exposed aud sorely tried, no one case can be relerred to in which these wert ever yet found wanting. consequently now find all the other "invention! and improvements," (at one time so called) ot this class entirely abandoned and thrown away, while tbe name salamander (first applied to this safe only) is now takes bold of with avidity, and used indiscriminately to every article in the shape of a safe, lacking other recommendations to public favor.

Tbe subscriber would therefore caution purchasers against 44 imitations" of all kinds and in an article ofsr much importance as a good safe always must be to loot well before making their selection, being well assured thai they will find the Herring's Salamander, as now made, the improved of all Improvements, and ia every respect a hen placed in comparison with others by far thr cbeapest and the best."
