The volume of tone is equal to that of a small Organ, and by means of the swell may be increased or diminished at the pleasure of the performerit is sufficiently loud for small churches, and is well calculated for a parlor Instrument. The unremitting attention which you have paid to your ship, has only been equalled by your caution and prudence--inspiring a confidence which, we assure you. is the highest of gratifications in a journey of this kind We regret extremely, that a continual succession of strong head winds for fourteen days- circumstance so unusual at this season-should have prolonged somewhat our passage; but, however annoying in itself, it has offered us an opportunity of appreciating more fully the qualities to which we have alluded. We beg of you to receive the assurance of our highest esteem and regard, and to believe us Your sincere friends and well-wishers. myl5 (Signed by all the passengers) COMMERCIAL.

Commercial Summary per British Mall Steamer America. TUESDAY, May 15.

The money market has experienced little if any change since the departure of the Cambria, and the steady influx of specie is placing the banks in a very strong position, notwithstanding the previous and present reshipment of bullion to France. This abundance of money has not been without its influence among speculators generally, and strictly first class paper can now be taken at 6 a 7 per and fair good names at a per cent The business on the other hand in stocks, experiences that same lack of animation before noticed, and it is impossible to tell anything about the movement in advance, so complete is the inactivity of the market. The arrival of the Crescent City from Chagres without coin, and with no later accounts from the Placers, has also given a serious blow to speculation, and also to the impulse of speculation. The following is a list of Banks of this State whose charters will expire within this and the next three years. All these banks, it must be remembered, will probably reorganize under the Free Law recently passed, in order to do which, a large amount of State and Government stocks must be deposited with the Comptroller as collateral security; the effect of which will be to absorb all that stock to be found in the market, 1849-Merchants' Exchange Bank, N.

Since the departure of the Cambria the sales have been extremely limited.

On Tuesday, the 8th sales amounted to 1000 bales, with a firm market, the inquiry being confined principally to higher grades On the 9th, 18.0 0 bales changed hands at rather better pricesThe sales of Thursday and Friday, the 10th and 11th, amounted to about 2000 bales at slightly better rates The Hibernia's intelligence came to hand on the 12th the indications of the market were not so favorable. the sales amounted to 2300 bales, principally for Havre The sales yesterday were 1200 a 1400 bales, and exhibited a very irregular market. lands. da. Correspondence of the Evening Post. WASHINGTON, May 13, 1849. The Cabinet were three hours in session yesterday, but it is understood that very little was effected towards the settlement of the conflicting pretensions of the numerous competitors for the New York appointments. Those for Baltimore were all made, and the successful candidates were all decided and ultra whigs but Mr. Maddox, who was made postmaster.

His is a case of regular lineal promotion. He had been for a long series of years chief clerk of the office, and was known only as a capable and faithful man of business. He was no politician, and therefore the change affords no excuse for a lamentation upon proscription. The weekly statements of United States Government Stock issued to foreigners, indicate notwithstanding a partial return to a settled order of things in Europe, the desire of investing in American seeurities continues unabated. These issues were, for the week ending May 4th: Loan of 1842.

900 1847 141,000 1848. 4,400 $146,300 For the week ending May 10th, they were as follows Loan of 1842.... $17,500 66 66 1846... 15,000 66 66 1848 50,000 $118,500 The average for several weeks previously had been about $60,000. The state of the continent, as shown by the last advices, justify the expectation that these investments will continue to increase in amount.

I am not one of those, however, who consider the influx of foreign capital upon us, on these terms, a week, tional benefit. my The interest paid on the stocks absorbed by these investments, is of course at once carried out of the country, and the capital itself must be re-exported, and will probably be withdrawn at a time when it will be most iuconvenient to part with it. Wash sold Law, justice and common sense have achieved one signal victory over Judge Crawford, the presiding judge of the criminal court of this District. The judge was appointed by Mr. Polk, and being a north- my ern man by birth, though long a resident and office holder here, he has seemed to think it incumbent on if him to show himself a worthy representative of his patron's principles.

As is usual in such cases, he overacts his part. I gave your readers some instanees of this disposition on the part of his honor during the interesting trial, last summer, of the persons charged with the abduction of slaves on board the schooner Pearl. His ho- 1 nor's rulings and decisions were promptly overruled my in the court above, and a new trial ordered on the old indictment. The first prisoner, Drayton, put on his second trial, has been acquitted. He is now undergoing trial upon other counts of the same indictment, not tried before.

The District Attorney, Rey, has taken the sensible precaution to associate with himself Walter Jones, ust reputed to be the most learned lawyer in the district. The prisoners are defended with zeal, elequence and ability, by honorable Horace Mann, of Massachusetts, and J. M. Carlisle, of this place. The government jewel case is not yet decided.

and tus The judge's decision upon the application for a new rers, trial of Hand will be given to-morrow. We have a report of a new case of default, that of Major Scott, navy agent. The amount of the deficiency varies in the current rumors from $6,000 to $120,000. The amount of the security is only ment 000. Much blame is attached to the fourth auditor, trade who should have required Major Scott to deliver his accounts at stated periods, a duty which it is said has beenu tterly neglected.

THE WHALE SHIP -The following ex? nora, tract of a letter from Frederick P. Bush, U. S. Consul at Hong Kong, appears in the Boston Traveller of yesterday: HONG KONG, Feb. 25th, 1849.

By the last mail we reported the loss of the whale ship Lagoda, at Japan, since which we find that it was a mistake, as the vessel was at Suam three weeks since, with 2100 barrels oil on board. The seamen now confined in Japan are deserters from her, having left the ship in the Japan Sea last June in one of the shall boats, and represented themselves as having been shipwrecked, doubtless thinking that they would be soon released. The Preble, sloop of war, sailed a few days since for Japan, to recover the men in question, but has returned owing to the small pox (one case) having broken out on board, and is now in this harbor, waiting to ascertain if the disease is likely to spread. In the event of no further cases, she will sail for Japan in a few days, for the purpose of bring away the Lagods deserters, and protecting the whaling fleet now in the Japan Sea, which is a very proper act on the part of Com. Gesenger, not only to show the Japanese that we protect our countrymen under like circumstances, but to render assistance to the large fleet of whale fishermen now in that sea.

The commodore is a credit to his conntry, and is much liked, as well as his officers.
