LOUIS Danny Jackson allowed three hits in seven innings to win for the first time since Opening Day, leading the Cincinnati Reds past the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Herm Winningham had four hits for the Reds and Paul O'Neill drove in three runs. Jackson (2-6) struck out one and walked two in winning for the first time in eight starts. He retired the first 10 batters and held the Cardinals hitless before Pedro Guerrero singled in the fifth.

John Franco pitched the final 1 innings for his 13th save in 13 opportunities. Ken Hill (2-2) allowed 11 hits and three runs in seven innings, striking out seven and walking two. Joe Magrane pitched the ninth for St. Louis, his first relief appearance since Oct. 4, 1987.

Twice in the game, Howard Johnson of the Mets was thrown out at the plate on close plays. Hernandez moved to third and Dykstra entered the game as a pinch runner.

Leiper then intentionally walked Kevin McReynolds and Gregg Jefferies to load the bases. The Padres played the infield in and Carreon's grounder glanced off Sa-lazar's glove, allowing the winning run to score. quality club and played against quality competition and the bid is still there." USF 12, Jacksonville 11 TAMPA South Florida rallied from a 10-run deficit and Scott Miller smashed a lOth-inning solo home run for a 12-11 victory over Jacksonville (37-19) at Red McEw-en Field and a sweep of the four-game series. South Florida (44-14) was down 11-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Troy Rusk's two-run single made it 11-3.

In a six-run sixth, Scott Henry led off with a solo home run. Ken Demske and Joe Lis scored, Rusk singled across two more, and Miller added the sixth run, cutting USF's deficit to 11-9. Demske singled in a run in the seventh and Andy Brandon's RBI single tied the game at 11-11 in the eighth. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Miller hit reliever Steve Smedley's offering over the leftfield fence. Florida St 8, Cincinnati 7 CINCINNATI Bob Reboin and Buddy Cribb hit homers as Florida State built an 8-1 lead then held on for an 8-7 victory over Cincinnati.

Florida State (44-16 overall and 14-4 in the Metro Conference, won two of three weekend games against Cincinnati (19-28 and 3-14). Miami 10, Mercer 3 CORAL GABLES Henry Hernandez hit a grand slam to cap a five-run fifth inning in Miami's 10-3 victory over Mercer. The Hurricanes finished the regular season 41-15. Mercer fell to 18-37. Winning pitcher Joe Grahe (11-4) struck out seven and gave up eight hits over seven innings for the win.

Georgia catcher Roger Miller, the all-time hit leader in the SEC, was the batting star for the Bulldogs, going 4-for-6 with a three-run homer. The 20 hits was a single-game high for Georgia this season. Lost in the carnage was a brilliant pitching performance by Georgia left-hander Dave Fleming (12-3), who tossed a three-hitter and struck out five.

Fleming barely broke a sweat, retiring 12 of the last 13 batters he faced. Of course, he had plenty of support. He lost the opening game of the tournament Thursday to LSU flamethrower Ben McDonald. But since that 6-3 loss, Georgia hitters have been on a home-run rampage. They used two for a 9-8 comeback win Friday over Auburn, including a dramatic lead-off homer in the bottom of the ninth by Brian Jester.

Saturday, the Bulldogs bounced Mississippi State from the tournament by hitting three homers. In contrast, the Gators batted just .200 during the four-day tournament. "What can you think? I mean, after two innings we're down 8-1," Fernandez said. "We had a really tough time trying to come back after the heartbreaking loss (4-2 to Auburn in 10 innings on Saturday night). They hit the ball and we didn't." The loss to Georgia wasn't particularly devastating for the Gators, who still figure to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

But the hopes of Florida being host to its first regional event may have been affected. "I think we have a good chance, but certainly winning the (SEC) tournament would've been a big plus," Arnold said. "It might have been an automatic thing if we'd done that. But we've been a MONTREAL SAN FRANCISCO ab bi ab bl 4 110 4 0 2 0 3 111 5 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 4 0 2 1 3 0 0 0 2 0 0 1 3 0 10 3 110 10 10 Raines If Foley 2b Galarraga lb Brooks rf Burke Wallach 3b DaMartlnez cf Fitzgerald Owen ss DeMartlnez ONIxon cf Butler cf DNIxon If WCIark lb Maldonado rf Riles 3b LaCoss Mitchell ph Kennedy RThompson 2b Urlbe ss Krukowp Brantley Oberkfell 3b Totals 3 0 0 0 4 0 11 4 0 0 0 4 2 2 2 3 0 10 0 0 0 0 10 10 4 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 10 0 0 10 0 0 1110 33 3 6 3 GAINESVILLE All week long, home run balls soared out of Perry Field as if they had sprouted wings for the University of Georgia. The flights continued Sunday, and with each deep drive the Bulldogs exposed just how shallow the Florida pitching staff had become.

Georgia raised its home run total to nine in the last four games with three more blasts and dumped the Gators 16-1, eliminating the hosts from the Southeastern Conference tournament. Sunday night, surprising Auburn which entered the tournament as the No. 6, and lowest, seed, edged Georgia 2-1 for the SEC title and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Mark Fuller, Scott Renner and Tommy Youngblood combined on a three-hitter for Auburn (40-18), limiting the Bulldogs (37-25) to only a solo homer by Jeff Cooper. That was in contrast to Sunday's first game, when Georgia hit everything Florida pitchers threw to the plate.

"Georgia was hot," said Florida coach Joe Arnold. "Everything they swung at was a base hit (20 of them). We couldn't get them out. "Basically, it comes down to pitching now because everybody is running out of it. It depends on whether you have somebody left who can get people out.

We didn't have anyone in that category today." The Gators (43-20) were simply overmatched against Georgia. Sophomore Todd Douma (5-4), the pitching hero in the SEC tournament a year ago, was shellacked for five runs in the first inning, including a three-run homer by Cooper. "We hoped he could do what he did for us last year," Arnold said. "But Douma was ineffective." The Gators sought relief in the second inning from right-hander Tim Cox, but his first pitch was whacked over the leftfield fence by Joey Alfonso. To understand the embarrassment of the moment, consider that Alfonso entered Sunday's game batting .163 and had not hit a home run this season in 184 at-bats.

Cox's line read even worse than Douma's five batters faced, five hits and three runs. "Anybody can hit balls down the middle," said Florida catcher Jose Fernandez, whose solo homer in the second inning provided the lone run for the Gators. "If James had anything to hide, why would he ask the police to drive him to his car and get the suitcase?" Knight said.

St. Louis County police officer Ron Stauffer confirmed Sunday that Wilder was not arrested until he returned to his car and removed the suitcase. Stauffer, in charge of the day watch Sunday, said he had no knowledge of Wilder's brother-in-law claiming responsibility for the marijuana. Stauffer said police officers first saw the two cars parked on the side of the road and were about to investigate when the cars left "at a high rate of speed." The two cars were pulled over separately about a mile away. Along with Wilder, two men in the Mercedes were arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

The driver of the Mercedes was also cited for driving with a suspended license, according to Stauffer. Knight intimated that the men may have been pulled over only because they were black and were driving "high-profile" cars. Based on the small amount of marijuana confiscated, Stauffer said the men likely would be charged with a misdemeanor and not a felony. Wilder's attorney, Wolff, said he hopes to convince police to decide by today whether the player will be charged. A first-time offender of a misdemeanor drug charge is usually fined, Stauffer said.

Wilder has been active in antidrug campaigns during his eight years in Tampa. "(Wilder) is terribly upset about this because he knows it's going to hit the papers," Knight said. "In all of the years I've known him, there's never been a hint of anything like this."
