ASSOCIATED PRESS GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT: Jeff Hamilton, recreation supervisor in Pendleton, waved at passing motorists while wearing a Santa Claus costume and driving a Zamboni down Emigrant Avenue in Pendleton on Friday.

There is only one fruitcake in the entire world, and people keep sending it to each other." Johnny Carson "Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people once a year." In its clumsy way, It does approach peace and goodwill. But it is clumsier every year." EM. Forster "Nothing's as mean as giving a little child something useful for Christmas." 32 Trump cuts ties with Republican Party Washington Donald Trump is declaring his independence. After years as a registered Republican, the outspoken real estate mogul has filed paperwork to become an unaffiliated voter in his home state of New York. Trump filed the paperwork making the change Thursday, a move prompted by his stated interest in mounting a third-party presidential run in 2012. "Mr. Trump has said for almost a year that if he is not satisfied with who the Republican candidate is, he may elect to run as an independent," spokesman Michael Cohen said Friday.

"This change in party affiliation certainly preserves his right to do so, after the finale of 'The Apprentice' in May." Asked if any developments in the GOP race prompted Trump to make the change, Cohen said no. Trump has said he plans to endorse one of the Republicans running. According to Politico, which first reported Trump's party switch, he will still be able to vote in the New York presidential primary next April. Trump had once been a registered Democrat. Mel Gibson and wife finalize their split LOS angeles Mel Gibson's three-decade marriage is officially over.

A judge finalized the actor-director's divorce on Friday from his wife Robyn, who was married to Gibson during his acting heyday and his more recent public downfall. The judgment entered by Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas keeps virtually all details of the pair's split confidential. Neither Gibson nor his ex-wife, whose name is being restored to Robyn Moore, attended Friday's proceedings. It does not indicate an official date for the former couple's separation. Robyn Moore did not list a date in her April 2009 divorce filing, although Gibson indicated they had been living apart since 2006.

The former couple have seven children together, but only their 12-year-old son is a minor and subject to a custody agreement. Vote by 4 p.m. today on our website at staradvertiser.com. Results will run in tomorrow's edition and online. Songwriter-bandleader-producer Dave Bartholomew is 91.
