i 8c SATURDAY, JUNE 17, 1 989 ST. PETERSBURG TIMES McEnroe makes up for painful memory, reaches semifinals i Making Magic gladdens some, but not Theus Results, 2C Associated Press TENNIS By JOHN HARRIS Times Stall Writer NBA Mr AP THROWN TO THE WOLVES: Hours after Rick Mahom was celebrating his NBA title with Detroit fans Thursday, he was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves first in the expansion draft EDINBURGH, Scotland John McEnroe eased the pain of a 2-year-old defeat Friday when he breezed into the semifinals of a pre-Wimbledon, grass-court tournament, overwhelming Argentina's Horacio De La Pena 6-3, 6-3. McEnroe lost to the Argentine in the first round of the French Open in 1987. "That was the sort of low point of my entire career," McEnroe said. "It was probably one of my worst efforts." McEnroe next will face Aaron Krickstein, who advanced to the semifinals when fourth-seeded Brad Gilbert withdrew during the second set because of a stomach muscle injury.

In women's semifinal action, top-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Ann Grossman 6-1, 6-1 and next will play defending champion and No. 2 seed Gigi Fernandez, who beat unranked Suzie Mair of Scotland 6-1, 3-6, 6-1. McEnroe could face old rival Jimmy Connors in Sunday's final if he beats Krickstein today and Connors defeats defending champion Peter Lundgren of Sweden. Lendl reaches semifinals of Queens Club tourney LONDON Ivan Lendl, given his first stiff test on grass as tie builds for Wimbledon, reached the semifinals of the Queens Club grass-court tennis championships with a 6-4, 4-6, victory over Michael Stich of WeSt Germany. Mats Wilander continued hjs poor season by losing to Paul Ab-nacone of Bridgehampton, N.TC, 6-2, 6-4.

Other tournaments Edgbaston: Martina Na-vratilova eased into the semifinals of a $150,000 Virginia Slims eveflt in Edgbaston, England, with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Australian qualifier Kristine Radford. NavratilovaJs next opponent is Elna Reinach 6f South Africa, who defeated American Betsy Nagelsen 1-6, 6-3, 7-f. In the other semifinal, second-seeded Zina Garrison will meet defending champion Claudia Kohde-Kilsch. Bologna: Roberto Azar.Ja 23-year-old from Argentina, upset fourth-seeded Ronald Agenor of Haiti in straight sets to move inlo the semifinals of a $123,400 tournament in Bologna, Italy. Another Argentine, Franco Davin, defeated Italy's Paolo Pambianco in a match between unseeded players to gain a semifinal berth against Azar.

ORLANDO Their pride has been wounded, and the hurt is fresh in the minds of those players selected by the Orlando Magic in this week's NBA expansion draft. Either they weren't good enough to stick with their former teams, they were caught in a numbers' game, or they couldn't get along with the coach. For Reggie Theus, there is anger and resentment against the Atlanta Hawks, who traded to obtain his services from Sacramento and then left him unprotected for the Magic after just one season. Theus lost a numbers' game with the Hawks' John Battle. For Terry Catledge and Sam Vincent, there is both sadness and joy in the feeling of being cast adrift by one team and then coming to another club that seemingly can't do without you.

Vincent had gone from starter to sub with the Chicago Bulls; Catledge and Washington Bullets coach Wes Unseld had their differences. Theus, 31, is an 11-year veteran who has played for losing teams throughout his career and who finally had the opportunity to play for a championship-caliber team in Atlanta. Catledge and Vincent, 25 and 26, respectively, want only to go where they will receive the most playing time. Not surprisingly, the initial reaction from Theus was quite different from how Catledge and Vincent viewed the change in location. "I'm going from 50 victories (Atlanta won 52 games this season) to what?" said Theus, who presently is on a hunting trip in California.

"I'm excited. There's a very good nucleus here," said Vincent, who lost his starting point guard job to one Michael Jeffrey Jordan. "I feel we're going to try to run, be an up-tempo team. My intention, yeah, is to start." "I'm going to work as hard as I can," said Catledge, a power forward who led Washington in rebounding this season, "and I intend to be on the floor (as a starter) at the beginning of the season." Theus said Atlanta general manager Stan Kasten promised he would be an important member of the Hawks. Theus, the only Hawk to start in all 82 games, spent the season trying to bury his reputation of being a one-dimensional player.

The Hawks, though, struggled in the playoffs and Theus was held as a scapegoat. "I heard somebody say, 'I didn't put this together for one Theus said. "That was Stan Kasten. I kind of believed that. It wasn't the truth, but that's the business." Orlando general manager Pat Williams, who envisions Theus as the Magic's top offensive player, said Friday he understands the depression Theus is feeling.

"Reggie wanted to be part of a championship club," Williams said. "I talked with (Atlanta coach) Mike Fratello. He said he had a good year with Reggie. "When he focuses on what kind of year it can be for him, he'll be fine," Williams said. "This'U be a dream-come-true for Reggie, being in this kind of situation." Williams denied reports from Kasten that the Magic would consider trading Theus.

Orlando also has no plans of trading Catledge or Vincent, both of whom could be starting in this fall's season opener. "I don't think any of us are going to accept the fact that we have to be a losing team because we're an expansion team," Vincent said. "We want to set our limits high," Catledge said. "We want to win." Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. TRACK AND FIELD Lewis (9.92) and Calvin Smith (9.93). Lewis also has run 9.93 twice, but the best he ever ran as a collegian at Houston was 9.99, a mark that Burrell shattered. Burrell, whose previous best was 10.03, was quick out of the blocks, took a decisive lead by about 70 meters and beat former University of Florida star Dennis Mitchell, the fourth-place finisher in last year's Olympics, by one meter. Mitchell took second in 10.03, just ahead of Andre Cason's 10.04.

Lewis chose to skip the meet. Sowell trailed early before passing frohtrunning Sheila Echols at 30 meters and winning by two meters. Echols held on for second place in 11.12, just ahead of Sow-ell's LSU teammate, Esther Jones (11.13) and Florida freshman Anita Howard (11.14). Still another collegian, Lynda Tolbert of Arizona State, scored a convincing victory in the women's 100-meter high hurdles, winning in 12.75, the fourth-fastest ever by an American. Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Gail Devers-Roberts, the co-record holders at 12.61, and NCAA champion Tananjalyn Stanley of LSU (12.70) are the only Americans who have run faster than Tolbert.

HOUSTON Dawn Sowell, dressed in the flashy style of Florence Griffith Joyner and running almost as fast, won the women's 100-meter dash Friday at the Mobil Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Wearing a metallic gold-and-' black leotard over a white body Sowell was timed in 10.91 seconds, the second-fastest in the 2 world this year and the second-fastest ever by a collegian. Sowell, the newest member of the Flojo International track club named for Griffith-Joyner, the Olympic heroine had run "the fastest collegiate time ever and the fastest in the world two weeks "ago, clocking 10.78 in the NCAA championships at Provo, Utah. Griffith Joyner, who retired after her outstanding 1988 season, owns the world record of 10.49. While Sowell, a Louisiana State senior, was dazzling in the women's 100, another collegian, Houston junior Leroy Burrell, was just as impressive in the men's 100.

Burrell, who trains with two-time Olympic champion Carl Lewis, won in 9.94, the sixth-fastest ever and the fastest in the world this year. Burrell's time made him the No. 4 performer ever behind Canadian Ben Johnson (9.83), Mi 5950-34th STREET SUU I (Located off 31st St. So. and 58th Ave.

The Washington Redskins announced Friday that punter Tom Barnhardt, a former Tampa Bay Buccaneer, defensive tackle Dan Benish and tight end Bobby Micho have been waived. Barnhardt, a ninth-round draft choice of the Bucs in 1986 from North Carolina, signed last season with Washington after Steve Cox was injured in the opening game. He averaged 41.9 yards in four games.

Benish played three replacement games in 1987, but spent last season on injured reserve after hurting his knee in training. Micho attended the team's minicamp after he was signed as a free agent in April. However, he never played a game with the Redskins. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
