i I SUNDAY, AUGUST 7, 1988 ST. PETERSBURG TIMES WES The Ma. "ffamis Wives of Cardinals share the hoping and the waiting of minor leagues By WAYNE McKNIGHT TIrrft Corraapondant ST. PETERSBURG As Mike Senne steps to the plate for the St. Petersburg Cardinals, his wife, Lisa, stands up and reminds him to keep his elbow up.

yL ilx fa baseball is a competitive sport and you never know what will happen one day to the next, it's almost like a vacation. Where else can you go watch your husband work?" A switch at short: Shortstop Crucito Lara has been sent down to the Cardinals' Springfield club. Lara left after committing 38 errors in 96 games. He had a .207 batting average and 20 runs batted in. Julian Martinez has replaced Lara as the Cards' regular short from the stands.

Most of the players say they can't hear their wives cheering, but Mike has told me he can hear me giving him advice." Lisa, who works at Mother Care, in the Tyrone Square Mall, attends every home game and makes most of the road trips. "Sometimes it's tough financially, but we both have a dream and playing professional baseball is a job for Mike," Lisa said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I know he must go for it. I will work around him and continue to be his best friend, coach, trainer and wife. "I don't mind the constant moving around, because it's interesting to have friends all over the place, but it is frustrating never knowing what to expect from management.

You must be prepared for anything on any given day." Timet photo V. JANE WINDSOR Amy Hewes, Lisa Senne and Carrie Balfanz (left to right) cheer during a doubleheader on Thursday. Marlins have moved from Miami, but Hialeah fans yet to warm up to them By MIKE PAYNE Tim Staff Writer "I'm there for emotional support. I think patience is a virtue, and we have to keep the dream of playing in the big leagues in the back of our minds. We are in this together.

Carrie Balfanz stop. Martinez is hitting .252 with 26 RBI. Off to Savannah: Pitcher Rob Livchak was moved to the St. Louis Cardinals' Class A Savannah team Tuesday. Livchak was a starter earlier in the season for St.

Petersburg but was used strictly out of the bullpen during the past month. He left with a 4-6 record and a 5.56 earned-run average. In his first start at Savannah, Livchak hurled five innings, allowed no runs and two hits. He struck out six. St.

Petersburg also brought two pitchers up from Savannah: Mike Hinkle and Scott Lawrence. Lawrence started the year with the Cards but quickly went to Savannah. While at Savannah, he compiled a 9-4 record. In from Little Rock: Outfielder Paul Thoutsis arrived in St. Petersburg last week from St.

Louis' Double-A team, Little Rock. Thoutsis, who bats from the left side, is hitting .231. He was with St. Petersburg last season. Back in the FSL: The Cards acquired infielderoutfielder Terry Green from the Houston Astros organization on Thursday.

Green played for the Florida State League's Osceola team earlier in the season. People are watching: Starting pitcher Leny Picota might be feeling like a gate attraction this season. Picota has been the starting pitcher on the five days that St. Petersburg has recorded its best attendance figures. On July 4, before the Cards' biggest crowd of the year Picota hurled a six-hit complete game.

He allowed one run and struck out four. On May 3, "Say No to Drugs Day," a crowd of sixth-graders was among the 5,193 fans. Picota suffered a loss, pitching seven innings. In front of the San Diego Chicken and 4,952 spectators on May 24, Picota took lost but pitched 8ls innings and allowed only one run. He was given the ball July 21 (attendance 4,427) after the Hollywood Starlets performed.

He pitched 6 innings for a victory. Before the Cards' fifth-largest crowd of the year, 4,221 on St. Petersburg Times Night, July 16, Picota pitched 4 innings without a decision. For the five games, Picota had a 2-3 record, 15 strikeouts, and a 1.02 earned-run average. He pitched 35V3 innings and allowed four runs in front of a total of 24,041 fans.

Sitting behind Lisa is starting pitcher Jay North's wife, Anni. An-ni tends to their 10-week-old baby, Matthew, while intently watching her husband's pitching performance Thursday night against the Miami Marlins. When John Balfanz comes to the plate with the bases loaded, his wife, Carrie, tightens her fists and whispers to Lisa Senne. When Balfanz cracks a bases-loaded triple to right-centerfield, Carrie leaps out of her seat with joy. She smiles as Balfanz slides into third base.

It's a role that many cherish but few understand. Coping with the seasonal work of being a baseball minor-leaguer's wife is rewarding and frustrating. The women often sacrifice their own professional desires for the sake of their husbands' dream of playing in the big leagues. The players' wives sit together in the box seats just to the right of the visitors' dugout at Al Lang Stadium. Some of the wives are more vocal than others, but all watch game after game.

"I think the best way I can support Jay is to listen," said Anni, who was working as a lab technician at Bayfront Medical Center before she took maternity leave. "I married a ballplayer, and I'm following his career. We both have a dream, and my career right now is secondary." Minor-league ballplayers frequently move from city to city at a moment's notice from management, but Jay and Anni have been able to stay in St. Petersburg. "We don't know what it is like to receive a 24-hour notice that we have to move to another city, but I know how tough it is for the wife, because we've had many friends come and go just this past season," Anni said.

Jay has been with the Cards for nine seasons, and Anni has seen many of her friends leave town. "I think it's a lot different from the major leagues, because you really never can establish a daily living pattern," Anni North said. "It's tough, because you never know who will leave. I try to support Jay as much as I can and continue with my own daily living style." Though all the Cardinals' wives cheer for their husbands, none has offered more help than Lisa Senne. "I've been with Mike since college," said Lisa, who is expecting a child and has been married to Senne since Feb.

13. "We started from the lowest point of the Cardinals organization, and I probably know his swing better than anyone does. I give him pointers, and he caq always hear me when I shout will be under new ownership next season. Marlins general manager Sonny Hirsch said the current owners, Miami businessmen Joe Ryan and Ron Fine, are looking to sell, partly because of Ryan's failing health, "There are some perspective people in line," Hirsch said, "I really believe it will turn baseball around in south Florida." Working through the slump: When he started the season swinging the bat well, Gary Berman had to figure he would remain with the Class Double-A Reading Phillies through the remainder of the year. But he realized after tailing off that he probably would be going back to Class A Clearwater, where he spent all of last season and led the team in home runs, runs batted in, and fan votes for team MVP.

Berman's .231 average, one home run, and six RBI in 130 at bats had taken him out of the starting lineup. The next step was obvious. "Any job, a demotion isn't something you welcome," Berman said. "I was told it was a situation of getting more playing time. I was in a little bit of a slump, and I just didn't get out of it." He realized that Clearwater would not be an immediate cure.

"The difference between Single-A and Dou- ble-A is not dramatic," Berman said. "It wasn't a matter of thinking I was going to come down here and tear up the league. I think with most hitters it's confidence at the plate and believing in yourself. "I didn't when I came down, because I wasn't swinging the bat well." Berman is coping. "The average doesn't reflect it but I'm happy," he said.

"I've had a few games where I was hitting the ball hard and lining out to left field. Those are 0-fers, but I'd rather do that than not hit the ball hard." Notes The Dunedin Blue Jays lost infielders Dan Etzweiller and Alexis Infante to retirement this week. The Tampa Tarpons closed the gap between themselves and the Western Division- leading Charlotte with a home-and-home sweep of the Rangers last week. In the first game of the set, at Tampa's Al Lopez Field, Norberto Martin's two-strike bunt with two outs keyed a three-run rally in the ninth for a 6-5 win. Aubrey Waggoner had a two-run triple to tie the game and scored the winning run on Martin's squeeze.

The Tarpons also managed a doubleheader sweep of the West Palm Beach Expos on Wednesday. Pitchers Jerry Kutzler and Dave Reynolds each went the route for Tampa. Kutzler's win was the 12th in his past 13 decisions, lifting his record to 13-6. It was his 11th complete game of the year. Correspondent Rick But) or contributed to this report DUNEDIN He didn't expect a rash of season ticket sales, but Miami Marlins general manager Sonny Hirsch was hoping for a better reception when the team left Miami Stadium in favor of uptown Hialeah.

The move to the stadium at Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School in May which officials said would only be until a new 5,000 seat stadium in Hialeah was complete was supposed to create a market for the Marlins in the city of Hialeah, located 5 miles northwest of Miami. To Hirsch' disappointment, that has not been the case. "It's disappointing but not discouraging," Hirsch said. "It hasn't come around like we thought it would." Hirsch feels the real problem lies with identity. "Hialeah has never really had a professional team of their own," he explained.

"I think it's gradually gotten to be a situation where they're just now starting to accept the team as their own, but not whole-heartedly. But it's difficult because it says Miami in the standings, Miami on the caps, and Miami on the uniforms. The people of Hialeah haven't really come around 100 percent. But they will. "I think it would have made more sense to make the move at the beginning of the year than when we did." One problem Hirsch and the Marlins didn't anticipate was the refusal of the Hialeah Miami Lakes school board to allow beer sales on school property during games.

Hirsch initially thought the board meant no beer sales while school was still in session during May and early June, but the school board meant no alcohol sales ever. "We didn't really feel we would have the opposition we did," Hirsch said. "We thought when school was out we would get a different reaction. But we didn't. And we've decided to not even pursue it.

There's no sense in ruffling any feathers." Hirsch said he believes the Marlins' new stadium, set for completion by next spring but still not under construction, will help Hialeah fans feel a connection to the Marlins. "It should only take about four months to build because it's mostly made of aluminum and steel and almost no concrete," Hirsch said. Should the stadium not be complete by opening day, Hirsch said the Marlins could continue to play a few games at Hialeah Miami Lakes, the stadium at Miami Dade North, or return to Miami Stadium. But he's banking on the new stadium still unnamed to be completed on time. Hirsch said that would go a long way in winning the Hialeah fans over.

Marlin9 for sale: The Miami Marlins likely Mike and Lisa started the season in Little Rock, with the Cardinals' Double-A team, but Senne was sent back to St. Petersburg after a few weeks. "It was frustrating for both of us, because I think it was the first time I have ever seen Mike challenged in his baseball career," Lisa said. "I love baseball, and I will hold on to our dream as long as possible." Carrie Balfanz has been married to John since Feb. 20 and already feels the emotional toll of being a professional ballplayer's wife.

"You constantly have to be mentally ready for anything," said Carrie, who travels six days from Bakersville, at the beginning of the baseball don't mind the travel in this league, because most of the trips are relatively close, but you just never know what to expect as far as packing up and leaving town." Carrie Balfanz stays in St. Petersburg during the summer and works at The Limited clothing store at Tyrone Square Mall. "I'm 100 percent behind John's baseball career," Carrie said. "I'm there for emotional support. I think patience is a virtue, and we have to keep the dream of playing in the big leagues in the back of our minds.

We are in this together. I've put my career on hold. If I were more serious about my career, I wouldn't have married a ballplayer. I think it's important to work through the minor leagues together." "We are just like everyone else," Anni North said. "We are fans who want to see our husbands do the best that they can do.
