Moss-Feaster Guardian Funeral Home, Belcher Road Chapel, Clearwater. The nutrients also contribute to algae growth, and as algae dies it turns to muck on the lake bottom, eliminating the bottom necessary for sportfish spawning, Denson said. "Increased urbanization will only compound this," he said. In 1982 there was an average of 45 pounds of fish per acre in Lake Tarpon.

According to the new study, there now is an average of 119 pounds an acre an increase of 165 percent. The number of largemouth bass increased even more, from 13 pounds to 63 pounds an acre. Between 1970 and 1977, when tests were conducted almost annually, the amount of fish ranged from 25 pounds to just under 60 pounds an acre. The latest tests were conducted during the week of Oct. 19 in four 1-acre sections of the lake.

Several fishermen expressed concern about killing that many fish, but Denson said the tests did not harm the overall fish population in the lake. He said the fish that were collected were healthy. The information will be presented next Thursday to the Lake Tarpon Management Committee, which was formed after the summer's algae bloom to develop a management plan for the lake. TARPON SPRINGS Fishing never has been better in Lake Tarpon. But fish experts say it has become Zoo good.

Results of last month's controversial tests on the lake, which involved killing fish so they could be studied, indicate that the number of fish has nearly tripled since the last test in 1982. "The study indicates that the lake is heading toward a problem," said Ken Denson, fisheries biologist with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, which conducted the study. "A healthy fish population and a healthy lake is not necessarily the same thing," he said. Denson said the high fish count indicates an excessive amount of nutrients in the lake nutrients that come from septic systems, storm water runoff and fertilizers washed into the lake. The same nutrients are believed to have caused a massive algae bloom on the lake last summer.

If nothing is done to reduce the amount of nutrients in the lake, the sportfish population will diminish and trashfish, such as chad and stunted bream, that thrive on nutrients will dominate, Denson said.
