He won both the club's Woody Hayes Award for contributions to college football, and its Robert A. Zuppke Award for having the best college football team in the nation in 1988. "I just happen to have the best football players at the best school," said who was an assistant coach on Hayes' 1968 national champion Ohio Stale team.

"I said last year we were a year away. 1 hope I was right." Holtz, an East Liverpool, Ohio, unlive said Friday that he's had little time to reflect since the Irish clinched the title Jan. 2 by defeating West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl, but he wouldn't have it any other way. "The place to be is in the front," said Waltrip, a three-time Winston Cup champion looking for his First Daytona 500 victory. "That hasn't changed in a long time now, since at least 1985. "I remember standing here five years ago and telling people that the cars were too fast, that we couldn't pass. Now, other drivers arc saying that the cars arc too slow and you can't pass." Instead of blaming the restrictors for the situation, Waltrip blames the smaller profile cars now being used. twice, 70-53 in the final regular season game and 69-58 in the first game of the Division IV Sectional.

Try this one on for size. Bridgeport at 6-14 upset Frontier Thursday night 63-61 in double overtime. John O'Conncll, a dimunutive sophomore guard who had not scored in a varsity game this year, made a dramatic first appearance. He hit a three three-pointers, and hit them at amazing times. His first one tied the game in regulation to send it into overtime, his second tied the score at the end of the first OT and the third one, with three seconds left, won it for the Bulldogs.

Sale Ends Feb. 28th By FRANK SHEPHERD Tribune Sports Editor Tourney memories The boys' basketball tournament always revives some fond memories and always some bizarre stories. Already, this year is no exception. I must start out by remembering the great Indian Valley teams of the 1970s and their trips to Columbus. Also I recall that march by the River View -Black Bears in 1975 to the only basketball state championship any team in i.lhis county has ever won.

You always remember those that "just the Coshocton team of 1983 that made it to the regional finals to lose to Wellsville, 1982 team that lost to Napoleon in the state semifinals. jJarvis story It is about this time of year that longtime fans of the Coshocton Basketball Redskins find their memory going Jack to the last time the CHS basket-ball team made the trip to Columbus for the state basketball tournament. IN If you like to delve into history, the Redskins have made two trips to Columbus. The 1934-35 CHS team was wstaic runncrup to Akron North and the team that we are about to describe lost Hamilton Catholic, 57-53, in the Fairgrounds Coliseum in the state semifinals. Some of the members of that 1948-49 team were sophomre Carl Dick Wharton, Jim Kiste, George Stevens, Don Jarvis, Max Olingcr, Ross Corder, Keith O'Hara, Skip Hol-.

"der and Bill Davis. They were coached by Ralph assisted by Jack Anderson and Sky Wharton. There are many old timers who will tell you that this was Coshocton's best-ever team, even though they had just a 19-6 record. They were 20-3 the following year winning the COL and going 20-4, a year marred only by a 45-43 loss to I New Philadelphia in the district finals. But the 1948-49 Redskins team beat what many believed was the best team in the slate that year, in Akron South, 42-40 in overtime in district play at Muskingum College.

The person we interviewed for "Redskin of the Past" and this story was Don Jarvis, who was a starter on that championship team. Don still likes to talk about the game the Redskins won in Memorial Hall in Dover his junior year. Coshocton won the game 49-34, after trailing at halftime. "They had a big guy by the name of Woods, who scored 20 points the first half and we couldn't stop him. The coach told me at halftime that he would be my responsiblility and not to let him beat us.

"I stopped him all right, I don't think that he scored another point and you know I got 20 points the second half and we won it going away, Jarvis said. "My fondest memory of that season was the way we came back to beat Akron South. We trailed by 10 points with two minutes left in the game, Call got hot and we tied it up and won it in overtime. Akron South had not been beaten that season until that game. "My most treasured memory of those days was the comradship that everyone had with the coaches and their teammates.

There were few cars and no television to interfere. "Every Sunday we went to one of the player's homes for Sunday dinner, and that mom cooked for the whole team. We enjoyed it because you got to be friends with all the moms and dads as well as your teammates. It was sure a great time. "I can still remember the following we had through the tournaments.

Of course, at that time boys' basketball was the only thing we played and all the townspeople turned out for the basketball games. We had a great following to Columbus," Jarvis said. Don also was an outstanding baseball player and pitched on the last American Legion team that got to the state finals from here in both his sophomore and junior years. His baseball pitching began when he was 11-years old. He got a call from Jim Plematis to pitch for the local sandlot team, because someone told the manager that he had a weiner ball and got men out t.

with it. (Weiner ball was a slow curve.) "I believe our class was the first one had a freshmen team. Everett 1 Bushong started the team and got us games and then got us into a number of tournaments. I think that was what made us so good in the end," Jarvis said. "The other thing that made us awfully good back then was that we were all capable of scoring in double figures and it didn't really matter if we were a starter or the eighth player on the team, we knew that we could all score.

Don went on to play college ball at Kent Slate but after one month of col- lege was ready to come home. He went to Tcnncsse that next summer to play pro baseball, but a month of running soured him on that. "All they wanted us to do was run, 1 and I was already in shape. I just wanted to take the ball and pitch." After a month of that he came back to Coshocton. 'k Don married the former Mary Jo Fitzpatrick, a cute little blonde cheerleader from Conesvillc.

They have three children, Lenny, Jeff and Lon i and arc now the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. I Don is still living in Coshocton and works at the Home Candy Company. Mary told us, "We still like to get those old scrapbooks out and look at the pictures of Don's athletic days." Div.
