(AP) Buckeyes have selves to blame for MSU loss "If you're running good, they'll keep you in. If you're not they'll take you out," said Ezor, adding that Hick-son's talent makes his game easier.

"He's a power back he runs, runs, runs, and when they put me in I just start cutting Ezor said. Ohio State coach John Cooper said his team "isn't slrong enough to stop anyone on defense." "Michigan State is a big, strong, physical team," Cooper said. "When you play Michigan State, you have to score three or four touchdowns at least, to win. "We made some yards, but didn't score any points." "When we get near the goal line we need to fight to get in as a team, we can't rely on one individual," Ohio State fullback Scotty Graham said. EAST LANSING, Mich.

(AP) Two days before Halloween, the Ohio State Buckeyes thought they were seeing a ghost. Hyland Hickson looked just like Lorenzo White, only more scary, as he rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown on 37 carries Saturday. When he was finished, Michigan State had defeated Ohio State 20-10 in a mistake-filled Big Ten football game. "Hickson was a total surprise to me," Buckeye linebacker Orlondo Craig said. "He's a good runner." Hickson is a product of Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard, the same school the Spartans found White, the Ail-American who now is an NFL rookie with the Houston Oilers.

Hickson broke White's single-season rushing mark in high school with 1 ,700 yards as a senior. The 5-foot-10, 214-pound sophomore had to sit out the Spartans' 1987 season due to Proposition 48 and started the 1988 campaign behind Blake Ezor. "I knew he was supposed to be able to do this, but this is the first time I really saw it," Michigan State coach George Pcrles said. "I said to him, 'You're a back I'll pump him up now. I told him, 'When you get your opportunity, don't blow it' and he certainly didn't blow it." Michigan State turned the ball over twice, losing two of three fumbles while the Buckeyes lost two of five fumbles and had two passes intercepted.

"It bothered me during the game because we weren't capitalizing on all the points we could have made," Perles said. "I think Blake's fumbles were questionable (but) I don't have any criticism of the officials. They all even up." Buckeye fumbles led to a Michigan State touchdown and a field goal. A bad snap on a punt set up the Spartans' other field goal. The Buckeyes only touchdown resulted from a Michigan State fumble.

"It's the same old story," Buckeye coach John Cooper said. "I sound like a broken record. We're not strong enough to stop anybody on defense. Michigan State is a big, strong, physical team." The victory improved the Spartans record to 3-4-1 overall, 3-1-1 in the conference. Ohio State fell to 3-5 and 1-4.

Indiana 45, Iowa 34 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Carolina St. 7 Duke 31. Georgia Tech 21 By LISA ZAGAROLI Associated Press Writer EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Ohio Slate quarterback Greg Frey said ihc Buckeyes have themselves lo blame for their 20-10 loss to Michigan State on Saturday. "It's really frustrating.

We kept beating ourselves," said Frcy, who passed for 229 of the team's 360 yards. "It seems like we're doing a lot of things right. But wc had a lot of chances to turn it around." Spartan coach George Perlcs said Frcy played his best game ever. "Frey is the slipperiest guy we've played," Pcrles said. "He eluded us, he scrambled.

He showed his athletic ability today more than any film I've seen." Players from both teams credited the Spartans' victory at least in part to Michigan State's tough offensive line, led by Tony Mandarich. "Tony's a very strong person. But it's more than size. It's a matter of tech nique and quickness when you're playing on the line," Ohio Slate defensive tackle Ken Coleman said. Spartan tailback Hyland Hickson rushed for 179 yards on 37 carries, and said he had the offense to thank.

"There were great big holes anybody could run through," he said. "The offensive line, they're great. They get better each week," agreed tailback Blake Ezor, who rushed for 155 yards on 29 carries. "There's tremendous holes." Ezor struggled early in the game, fumbling the ball twice once to set up an Ohio State touchdown and once on the Ohio State 1 yard line. U.S.
