Letters About Literature The State Library's Louisiana Center for the Book announced the state winners of the Letters About Literature competition, a national reading-writing contest that asks students to write a personal letter to an author or poet, living or dead, explaining how that writer's work impacted the students' lives or worldviews. The art teacher, Cindy Marcantel, gathers the students around her as they watch a slideshow of art from the artist they have been studying.

Each student gets a chance to explain his or her view and what he or she notices about each painting. Then they work on a basic art exercise to further cultivate their new knowledge. In the end, the students apply their skills and use a variety of mediums to draw or paint like the artist they had studied. At last, the students hang up their art on the walls of the studio after each class. Students of all ages participate: some as young as 7.

All of the students get a chance to learn and create in Marcantel's art class. When asked about her students, she said, "I just love seeing them cre ate and then just be so surprised at what they've discovered about themselves." The students wholeheartedly agree. Student Adelle Brous-sard, 16, commented, "I like learning about the different artists and their different works." Marcantel focuses on classical art training, which is an aspect of all the performing arts classes at Sheridan's studio. "In this art class we are focusing on the basics of art, but I am not doing them in order," she said. "We are taking the artist and looking at his life and how they came up with their style of art, and then we are taking that style and do a project that imitates that style and within that project we're learning some basics of design and the elements of art." The new art class is blossoming in its first year quite quickly and is open to students next semester.
