Church To Unveil Final Ceramic Mural In Series Of 17 Sunday 8, 1963 COMMUNITY PUBLICATIONS Andrene Kauffman's ceramic portrait mural of Roger Williams, early American pioneer for brotherhood and religious freedom, will be dedicated at the 11 a.m. service Sunday of Third Unitarian church, 301 N. Mayfield. The portrait will conclude the series of 17 a which Miss Kauffman began In 1955. She offered the mu- rals, as well as a stained glass window, as a gift in memory of her parents.

They were inspired by a sermon she heard the minister, Dr. Edwin T. Buehrer, preach eight years ago on the "Saints of Liberalism." In the next collection plate, Dr. Buehrer received a letter saying she would like to create ceramic portraits for the church of the Discount lor the Month of May. SHE ALSO created the large stained glass window which dominates the south wall of the church, to express through arrangement of "the spirit and challenge of our times." The design has a diag- onal line of strength and movement with a counter-balance at right angles, symbolic of the forces at work creating tension. Its movement is outward and at the same time unifying, characteristic of tension and balance. Its design moves through and beyond the window, with an effort to discern the pattern as challenging as is the paragon of life itself.

The color and design suggest the "limitless horizons of the human spirit, and that whereas solution to the problems of our times is there, it is not easy or obvious." There is no doubt that her studied a i i contribution has enhanced the church design, i Mayor Daley's Landmark commission designated as a Chicago architectural landmark in 1960 for "its excellent use of materials in a well-expressed statement of the building's function." Materials for the a and window were contributed by the church. Miss Kauffman is professor of painting at the school of the Art Institute of Chicago. If lie is men tally or physically disabled his children obviously need aid. Here is an example of a husband and wife with eight children coming under the welfare department's new ADCU--aid to dependent children with par- ints unemployed: This family's total monthly budget figures out to $419.90. One of the parents receives $225 in unemployment compensation and ADC gives the family $195 to balance the budget. IF a $240 ceiling proposal passes and the unemployment compensation expires this family will be some $200 short of its monthly budget.
