PASCO, HERNANDO CITRUS PAGE Make way for the TVCR Associated Press Remember the old adage that "you can't take it with Don't believe it for a minute. TVCR, which stands for television video cassette recorder, is a portable unit that's not only a portable TV set but also a built-in VCR. Just as the Walkman revolutionized where and when we listen to music, TVCR manufacturers hope to change the where, when and how of video viewing, as reported in the current issue of Video Magazine. Perhaps the sexiest of all the TVCRs is Casio's LCD screen TVCR. LCD stands for liquid crystal diode, the mechanism which re places the cathode ray picture tube and allows for greater miniaturization.

The beauty of LCD screens is they take up less space and consume less power, allowing for greater portability. However, the picture may not be quite as clear as a cathode ray picture tube. Casio further reduced the size of the unit by using a miniaturized VHS tape transport of the type found in VHS camcorders. Casio's result is the 4.9-pound VF-3000, priced at $1,399, a TVCR the size of a hardcover book. Sony, too, has been inventive in its attempt to reduce TVCR size.

By using 8mm cassettes, which are one-sixth the size of VHS tapes, HOMEOWNERS WANT CASH? Sony has produced a prototype TVCR with a 2.7-inch LCD screen. Like the Casio, this as yet unnamed product can record off the air, from a camera and from another VCR. The larger model TVCRs use regular cathode ray picture tubes with screens that measure five to 19 inches diagonally. They are meant to be carried from one place to another and plugged into a standard i socket or car cigarette lighter, but some can operate from a recharga-ble battery pack. This kind of TV is available from Panasonic, Emerson, Totevision and Standards.

At the high end, for example, there is the Panasonic AG-500, priced at $1,250, a 10-inch model hooked to a VHS player that can rerun a tape automatically. At the low end there's Citizen's VCP-5MU TVCP, for $600. In addition to the consumer market for TVCRs, the business world has recognized the potential in TVCRs as the ultimate presentation device. More and more corporations are using video for training and sales promotions. TVCR manufacturers have high hopes these personal video recorders and players mean busy commuters will give up their morning pa- I pers and commune instead with last night's tape of Late Night With David Letterman.

Similarly, air travelers will have an alternative to the airline's movies on long flights. TVCRs may actually change the way we lead our lives. For instance, there may come a day when instead of seeing a passerby bopping along to the music on his Walkman he may be all-consumed with the latest pi quest on Oprah Winfrey. And possibly even the most hardcore couch potatoes may venture into the outside world for a change of scenery now that they can take their TVCR with them. It's just the couch that's hard to move.
