The FBI lists Bundy as a suspect in 36 murders in five states, but when he was arrested in Florida in 1978, Bundy told Pensacola detectives that he had killed in six states and they should "add one digit" to the FBI figure.

Bundy was a teen-ager known to prowl around Tacoma streets at night, Mrs. Burr recalled, lie lived about three miles away, had a paper route in the area and often visited an uncle who taught music at the Puget Sound University campus near the Burr home. "He was in trouble early, hot-wiring cars," Mrs. Burr recalled. She does not believe Ann Marie knew Bundy, but some Tacoma residents believe the child had come to know him on his paper route and might not have been afraid of him.

Years later, when Bundy became an inmate on death row in Florida and a suspect in dozens of murders, the Burrs wrote to Bundy and asked about Ann Marie. Bundy responded twice, denying any role in the murder and insisting that he had been just a normal teen-ager. "He said he wouldn't have hurt a little girl," Mrs. Burr added. After the exchange of letters, a doctor friend of the Burrs tried to talk with Bundy, "but he just avoided the real questions, talking instead about the Green River murders and world events." The Burrs had hoped that Bundy might DUST he's a human being," Mrs.

Burr told the St. Petersburg Times in a telephone interview Sunday. "You hope he'll feel remorse for his own soul." But even if Bundy doesn't talk, the Burrs don't want the execution delayed. "I have a terrible feeling he would escape," Mrs. Burr said.

But the unresolved mystery continues to haunt them. "I wasn't really ready to know the truth a few years ago," said Mrs. Burr. "Now we are." all the answers." On Friday and Saturday, Bundy confessed to at least eight killings in Washington state and one in Colorado in the 1970s. As many as three other killings were also discussed, although authorities could not say whether Bundy was telling the truth in those cases or just trying to but time.
