For proof, inspect one of the best tournament hands of 1987, played last March by Dallas expert Bobby Wolff. Wolff refused the first heart but took the second, got to his hand with the ace of clubs and led a low trump to dummy's queen. A declarer who wanted to leave trouble alone would next ruff a heart in order to lead another low trump from his hand. But Wolff foresaw that trouble would find him even if he didn't look for it. West would take the ace of spades and lead a fourth heart.

East would then get the setting trick with the jack of spades. Wolff saw that his best chance was to lead a trump at once from dummy. He could lead a low trump or the king, depending on which opponent was more likely to be short in spades. Since it was clear that West held more hearts than East, it was likely that East had more spades. Wolff therefore led a low spade from dummy and had no further problem.

Question: You hold: A VKJ76 A 7 6 4. Partner bids one spade, you re- Opening lead 6 spond two hearts, and he then bids two spades. The opponents pass. What do you say? Answer: Bid three spades. Partner's bidding promises a minimum opening bid with six spades.

Since you have 13 high-card points, you must certainly make another bid in spades or in notrump. Either game is too ambitious, and partner's suit is safer than notrump, Invite him to go on to four spades, but give him a chance to breathe if he has opened a real dog.
