Guthrie Center's basketball record this year, both boys and girls has been very good and what's more important all the players conducted themselves as ladies and gentlemen at all times. We are proud of them and the origina of this conduct is from their two fine coaches Orville Frazier and Hap Merritt, they teach that kind of basketball.

E. bid and 10-15-170 Cemetery (Continued From Page 1) question then arises as to what purposes such a sizeable fund is to serve. That is probably one of the most important aspects of the trustee's job. The endowment fund is supposdly set up to provide for all costs of maintenance through interest paid on loans. Since maintenance costs are comparatively high and the cemetery is not fully endowed the interest receipts do fall short of their goal.

The difference is made up by a city levy for cemetery purposes. As trustee, Nelson can make loans in either one or two ways --first and second real estate mortgages and government or municipal He has averaged a Jour per cent return on his investments. Of the total $10,000 is now invested in first mortgages and $8,000 in government bonds. At a recent meeting of the city council Nelson advised that the city not purchase additional land for cemetery use. He pointed out that there are 280 unsold lots in the yard and that it will be some time before it will be completely filled.

Should a new yard be opened several problems would arise thai could be prevented if the cii-y waits i later, Nelson said. For one thing, if a new yard were to be opened the sale of lols in the present plot would undoubtedly fall off and the city would end up contributing to the maintenance of two partially filled cemeteries. Nelson settled in Guthrie 'Center in 1898 and worked as a pharmacist for 26 years here. For a period of 11 years he was associated with a household remedy firm in Des Moines but returned to Guthrie Center in 1936 to take up the insurance and real estate business which he is presently carrying on. His work as trustee of the perpetual care fund of the cemetery is on a "no-pay" basis as the law provides.

1 The Guthrie Center Tigers- were eliminated by the Bluejays of Panora from the sectiona tourney finals by a score of 54-50 The balance of power shifted several times, with Guthrie tying the "Jays" wifh five minutes remaining. Panora, however quickly regained the lead and nothing the Tigers tried in the way of last second offenses could save the day. The big offensive star Caulkins of Panora with Chief scorer of Guthrie Dowd with 22. This defeat leaves but one event on the '55 schedule, a pair of boy's games here Tuesday with Glidden. FT FTM G.
