PETERSBURG Raymond E. Reed, who saw that the mail got through to St. Petersburg homes and businesses for 41 years, died Sunday (March 19, 1989) at Humana Hospital-Northside. Mr. Reed, 92, retired from the post office in 1956 as superintendent of mails, a job that put him in charge of all incoming and outgoing mail.

Before that he was REED carrier, clerk, foreman, and assistant superintendent of carriers. "He really knew the mail," retired postmaster Harry W. Scott said Monday, and was a dedicated, highly organized worker. Scott, who joined the post office in 1946, recalled that he often found Mr. Reed on duty at 3 a.m.

when Scott arrived with mail that he had collected from postal boxes during predawn hours. "He was a hard worker," said Scott, who headed the local postal services from 1971 to 1985, "and conscientious. He always carried a small notebook that he wrote in, jotting down all the things he wanted to get done during the day." Mr. Reed, who lived at 7101 M. L.

King (Ninth) St. came here in 1907 with his parents from his native Leominster, Mass. "My Dad, William E. Reed, had a truck farm out on Ninth Avenue and 22nd Street," he told a reporter in 1978. His uncle, George Edwards, was St.

Petersburg's mayor in 1903 and later a Pinellas County commissioner, he said. When he started with the post office in 1915, "all the uniform you had was just a cap. I was a substitute, and there were just four routes, all downtown, then. You furnished your own bike, and they paid you three cents per hour for it." The next year, two more routes were added and Mr. Reed became a regular carrier, earning $75 a month and "worked up to $100 in four years.

Got married and raised three children on that, believe it or not." "Dogs? I got chewed on plenty," Mr. Reed said of his days of delivering mail by bicycle. "Used to carry a little club. Or, you could beat them off with the Sunday Times." In those days the post office "used to be in the old Tomlinson Building, the old City Hall, where Florida Federal's parking lot is now," he said. "Pigeons used to fly in, roost up in the rafters, and cancel the mail." Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Trude, Kenneth City, and id Virginia Davis, Seattle; a son, Prescott, of St.

Petersburg; five grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at R. Lee Williams Funeral Home, 3530 49th St. N.
