John B. Thompson Was First Regular Minister The growth of the Reformed Church of Highland Park as an important factor in the religious and civic life of the community has been due in large part to the faithful and efficient work of the several pastors who have guided it for the past 50 years. The original consistory of the church voted at its first meeting on June 16, 1890, to invite Rev. Edward T. Corwin, a professor at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary, to serve as pastor.

At the second meeting on July 17 the consistory receive: a report that Dr. Corwin not wish to bind himself as pastor, but would assume supervision of the church for six months and give all assistance possible. The Classis of New Brunswick had already ratified Dr. Corwin's selection as temporary head of the church. Rev.

Dr. Corwin conducted the first preparatory service, baptizing Mary Jane Senker and Charles Henry Senker, wife and son of Henry V. L. Senker; Charles Ewald Malmros and Elizalbeth Malmros, children of Carl and Gustafa Malmros; and George Francis Page, son of Charles P. and Anna Page.

At the consistory meeting on Beach, together with Mrs. B. S. Everitt of Jamesburg as guests of the Rev. and Mrs.

F. B. Everitt. Mr. and Mrs.

Thomas Wells, Mrs. Hattie Wagenhals, Mrs. George Hand and Ray Stillwell attended the convention of the Grand Session of O. E. S.

Telephone Jamesburg 40. riage rite between Deacon Alexander Merchant and Margaret Beaton Henderson, the first marriage consummated by the church. Dr. Thompson served until September of 1896. The first installed pastor the church, he had seen his congregation grow from 20 to 50 families.

Rev. Alexander S. Van Dyck, D.D., who had been a missionary at Amoy, China, for 13 years, became pastor on November 27, 1896. He resigned October 1, 1903. His loss was keenly felt by the congregation and the community in which he had worked for seven years.

Rev. E. J. Meeker A call was extended to Rev. Edward J.

Meeker, A.B., pastor of a church at Mohawk, N. who was installed as third pastor of the church on December 6. 1903. It was with keen regret that the church received the resignation of Rev. Mr.

Meeker on August 1, 1908, after five years' service as its pastor. The church had almost doubled its membership during his pastorate and was expanding as a vital factor in the life of the community. Rev. Thomas C. Easton, D.D., became pastor on May 9, 1909.

Dr. Easton, then 72, was well known in this vicinity, having been pastor of the First Church in New Brunswick from 1880 to 1886. He subsequently served as pastor of churches in Newark, San Francisco and Washington, D. before coming Park. With the "resignation of Dr.

Easton on January 1, 1911, a call was extended to Rev. Frederick F. Shield, B.D., pastor of the First Reformed Church of Long Branch, who began his pastoral duties on May 1. Under Rev. Mr.

Shield's direction, the church branched out into many fields of community service and continued to expand internally. During his pastorate, which was terminated on September 1, 1918, 310 persons united with the church, 130 during the last two years. Rev. Anthony Luidens Four months later Rev. Anthony Luidens, M.Th., was called from the West Hoboken Reformed Church and installed April 9, 1919.

Under Mr. Luidens, the church continued to become an, important in the religious and civic growth of the community. In March, 1924, in reviewing his five years as pastor of the church, Rev. Mr. Luidens pointed out that from 1890 to 1919, the nuuber of children enrolled in the Sunday school and Bible schools was 268.

In 1924 the enrollment was well over 700 for the Sunday, weekday and daily vacation Bible school. During his first five years as pastor, Rev. Mr. Luidens welcomed 183 new members, which brought the total membership of the church to 396. Under him the church became a -sustaining institution.

The continued growth was evident during the next six years of his leadership. On January 9, 1930, Rev. Luidens resigned, following a call from the Brighton Reformed Church at Rochester, N. The Classis appointed Rev. Theodore Brinckerhoff, pastor of the Suydam Street Reformed Church, as supervisor until a new pastor could be obtained.

In July, 1930, Rev. James B. Mulder was called from the Second Reformed Church of Irvington to become the new pastor. An account of Rev. Mr.

Mulder's pastorate will be found in other columns. Real Estate Houses For Sale LAWRENCE 234-Lot 75x125: 2- car garage; oil burner, $6,500. $4,000 first mortgage. $2,500 cash. See Jean.

JOHN BODINE THOMPSON First regular pastor of Reformed Church of Highland Park-1891 to 1896. December 2. Orville J. Hogan, a student at the seminary, class of 1893, offered to take charge of the church for six months without compensation if the sum set aside for the pastor's salary were applied to payment of the church indebtedness. This offer was accepted and Dr.

Corwin was given a vote of thanks for leaving the church through its first six months of existence. During the late summer of 1891 it was learned that Rev.
