A member of the American Kile Flyers Association, he published kite designs for various kite magazines. Locally, he taught kite-making to children at Walter Fuller Field and was a member of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ.

During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces. Survivors include his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Phyllis West, Jacksonville. and Elizabeth Johnson, Clinton, a son, John H. St. Petersburg; a brother, Robert Rye; and five grandchildren.
