5C ST. PETERSBURG TIMES MONDAY, MAY 25, 1987 raltege baseball FSU advances to WorSd Series By RICK STROUD Tlmei Staff Write Tampa takes on Columbus today in College World Series By BRIAN LANDMAN Timet Staff Writer to Mann before landing the Spartans' job, he would've jumped at the opportunity to work with him. Although Dominguez wants nothing more than to beat Mann's club today, he couldn't help but thank Mann for beating Wright State Sunday, which meant Tampa wouldn't have to play again until today. "Now we have a day rest and the longer we're here, the more relaxed and the more confident our kids will become," said Dominguez, whose team has a 1-1 tournament record after defeating New Haven Saturday night. Columbus rallied from a 3-0 deficit to rout Wright State 13-4 to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament.

In other action Sunday, Troy State defeated Cal-State Dominguez Hills 6-2. Dominguez Hills was to play Wright State later Sunday, with the loser eliminated. MONTGOMERY, AJa. In baseball, timing's everything. And if Columbus College coach Derek Mann's timing had been different, he would've had University of Tampa coach Kenny Dominguez in his dugout as an assistant.

Instead, the two will be in opposite dugouts at Paterson Field when Columbus (39-12) plays Tampa (41-10-1) today at 5 p.m. in Game 8 of the Division II College World Series. "My first year here at Columbus three years ago, they were talking about going Division I and that would mean I could hire a full-time assistant," said Mann. "I knew Kenny was at a junior college (Hillsborough Community College), but by the time I called him, he had just taken the job at Tampa." Dominguez said had he talked noles' Edwin Alicea and spun into South Alabama's dugout. But despite receiving 10 stitches in his head, he pitched effectively and didn't allow a hit until Marc Giordano singled to open the fifth.

Giordano wound up being a goat in the first ballgame when he badly misplayed two fly balls in rightfield. The first one he overran and it fell harmlessly for a double; the second one caused him to slip on his fanny and cost the Seminoles a run. "The fans were getting on me," Giordano said. "Somebody asked me what I had a glove on my hand for. I was down for awhile." The cloud to this silver lining for South Alabama was that Giordano would provide the Seminoles a bucketload of runs in the second game with his two-out grand slam.

Maksudian had homered his first time up off FSU lefty Chris Pollack to spot the Jaguars a 1-0 lead. But South Alabama ran out of arms and starter Art Stratton was gone after walking the bases full in the first inning. All three baserunners eventually scored and Giordano's slam in the second left the Jaguars trailing 7-1. "The big hit by Giordano really picked us up," Martin said. "Especially because the guy was about to get out of the inning." "We were a little concerned with our pitching," said Kitterll.

"They just put a lot of pressure on you. Then the grand slam put us down enough to take us out of our game." TALLAHASSEE Florida State took one false step along the road back to the College World Series. So after stumbling to South Alabama in the first game on Sunday, the Seminoles recovered to enjoy a 9-2 cakewalk and win the NCAA Atlantic Regional tournament. Outfielder Marc Giordano delivered the telling blow with a grand slam in the second inning, enabling FSU to avenge a 6-3 loss to the Jaguars which forced the doubleheader. "This means more to me than it did last year," said FSU coach Mike Martin, whose club fell to Arizona in the national championship game a year ago.

"The reason is because it's a lot tougher to go along knowing everyone is shooting at you." The victory earned the Seminoles their ninth College World Series appearance and the third in the last eight years. FSU (54-16) will meet Louisiana State Friday at 8:10 p.m. (EST) when play begins at the national tournament in Omaha, Neb. Meanwhile, it was a dispiriting finish for South Alabama (40-30) which battled its way back from Friday's 12-3 beating by the Seminoles. Few gave the pitching-poor Jaguars a chance to sweep FSU Sunday, but they were resurrected by the bat of Mike Maksudian, who slammed a home run in each of his last four games and was named the Boston's Wade Boggs (26) beats throw home as Chicago's Carlton Fisk gets set to make the tag in game Sunday.

"If there's a better hitter in the country than Mike Maksudian, I'd like to see that animal," said South Alabama coach Steve Kitterll. Maksudian's first blast of the day gave the Jaguars a 2-0 lead in the opener. FSU eventually tied the game in the sixth on Ed Fulton's two-run homer, but managed only six hits off South Alabama pitchers Phil Angelos and Stuart Fuller. Tolleson opened the inning with a walk off loser Donnie Moore (2-2). Rickey Henderson followed with a check-swing groundout, advancing Tolleson to second. Randolph then followed with his single to left-center to score Tolleson and give New York a 9-8 lead. California tied the score 8-8 when Gary Pettis led off with a double off Righetti and scored on Joyner's single.
