News of Courts and Public Offices EAST BAKERSFIELD IS $90,365 FOR KERN Includes Money From Bolli Slale mid Counly; Next Distribution in May. The regular March apportionment of general fund moneys from I lie county and state to the various school districts was made today, the total amount distributed amounting to Of tills sum $32,085 is from the Mate and $58,240 from the county. The next apportionment will he made in May. The moneys now given out to the districts are apportioned on the basis of $175 for the teacher and $10 for the average daily attendance of each inil)il.

H. Stewart to Be Arraigned Tomorrow F. 11. Stewart, charged with forgery by his wife, who was Mrs. Amelia Voorhees aL the time the complaint against Stewart was filed, will be arraigned by Justice Flournoy tomorrow.

Stewart has given bonds of $1000, and has retained Jesse Horsey as his attorney. Stewart left Bakerslield for Los Angeles last week, and the complaint was liloci immediately by Voorhees, who alleges that Stewart drew from her account at a local bank. Mrs. Voorhees joined Stewart In Los Angeles Friday and the two were married, just before the Los Angeles ofli- cers local I'd Stewart and arrested him. Abbott Pleads Guilty to Embezzling Funds George Abbott, the man who was employed by the Kern County Labor Council as an advertising solicitor for a few days and who was charged with embezzling JlOO of the funds, entered a plea of guilty when the matter came up for setting the date of his second trial today.

The jury in the former trial disagreed. i Attorneys Emmons Johnstone applied to the court for probation for the man and Judge I'enirs set the bearing for March 20. ORCHARD DISTRICT CLERK. CORNAGGIA DIVORCE SUIT. Lodovico Cornaugia has tiled suit the county clerk here suit for divorce from Mrs. Delores Cornaggla. to whom he was married in San Diego. He alleges that his wife deserted him in April, 1913.

Masked Men Knter Place Saturday Kvenintf: Till of About $30. Forcing Herb Baker, proprietor of the Fast Side Bar, and his bartender to throw up their hands, two men robbed the saloon of about $15 Saturday about 9 o'clock. I The men, masked, entered the place and while one of the men held Baker. the bartender and several patrons at bay the other went behind the liar and opened the cash register. After they had taken all the money In sight they backed out of the place, warning their victims that any attempt to follow them would prove disastrous.

One of the men was about feet inches in height, wore overalls, tan shoes and a black hat. lie weighed about 135 pounds. He used a large caliber revolver, probably a 4G. The other man was dressed about the same, except that he wore a black overcoat. Both men seemed to be about 21 years of age.

R. Secarey and Joe Brady have been arrested by the police officers, and Brady has been identified by the porter at (he bar as one of the men. Brady, however, lias a good alibi and the officers are inclined to believe that the real criminals have yet to be captured. Escaped Convict Is Taken Back to Kansas John Duffy, alias Andrew Wood, the man arrested here several weeks ago and identified as an escaped convict from Fort Leavenworth, as an army deserter, and as the criminal who dug out of the Sacramento jail several years ago, was taken back to Kansas yesterday by Captain Purcell of Fort Leavenworth. The man was identified through the efforts of C.

H. Stone, head of the local identification bureau. Duffy escaped from Fort Leavenworth last August with two other men by digging through two brick walls, one four feet six inches in thickness and the other eighteen inches in thickness. The other two men were captured within two months, one in Chicago and the other in Salt Uike. Duffy, who was captured here, was serving an eight-year sentence for stealing from an Interstate carrier.

His term will be up in 1921. Pickpocket Nabbed By Victim in Bar Charles Miller was arrested by Officer La Chance Saturday evening in the Old Crow saloon on a charge of being a pickpocket. The man, it is said, stole a pocketbook from Dawson while in the saloon. Dawson seized Miller just as the latter was taking his hand out of Dawson's pocket. He was held at the saloon until La Chance arrived.

Miller was given a thirty-day sentence by Police Judge Bunnell this morning. Ranch Hand Held Up; Watch and $30 Taken Prank Phillips, employed at the Rankin ranch in Walker's Basin, was 'strong armed" by two men back of the Kosel hotel Saturday night. Phillips was walking down the alley when someone suddenly seized him from behind, the assailant holding his head while a companion searched Phillip's pockets. The men took a Walthaui watch and about Phillips was unable to get a good look at his assailants and consequently was unablei to give any description of the men. A number of suspicious characters have been arrested by the police and are being held for further investigation.

Three men, John Ryan, James Maker and John Beck, have been given short sentences on vagrancy charges. They may be connected with the hold up. T. W. Dupes Arrested On Complaint of Wife A complaint charging T.

Dupes, a local carpenter, with a threatened offense and applying to have him placed under bonds to keep the, peace, was filed with Justice George Flournoy Saturday afternoon by Dupes' wife, Mrs. Eugenia Dupes, who is the defendant in a divorce suit tiled in the superior court last week by Dupes. Mrs. Dupes alleges that her husband on February 2) threatened to kill her and her children. Dupes was arraigned by Justice Flournoy this morning.

Depositions will be taken by Flournoy Wednesday to determine whether Dupes shall be placed under bonds, to keep the peace. Dupes is out under $1000 bonds. Dupes tiled suit for divorce last week on the grounds of cruelty and neglect to himself and the children. EXAMINATION. The arraignment of J.

A. Hicks, charged with grand larceny, based on the alleged theft of a motorcycle from Johnson, v.ill have his preliminary examination tomorrow morning before Justice Flournoy. ARRAIGNED. Ktl Miller, the man who finished a thirty-day sentence in the county jail Friday for petty larceny committed in Maricopa, and who is alleged to have entered Joe Chain's second hand store Friday afternoon, attacking Chain and stealing a watch and a number of rings, was arraigned Gy Justice Flournoy this morning. 0. HART Marlxvue, Hand Concert and Dance For Supervisor on SI. Patrick's Kve. On St. Patrick's eve.

March HI. Fast Bakersfield will celebrate the return lo office of Supervisor .1. O. Hart with free barbecue, band concert and dance, and an invitation has been extended to the residents of the Third district to be guests that evening. The celebration will lake place at Druids hall.

A beef has been donated for the occasion, and business men i nd others will join in making the evening a success. The band concert will take place on the street, but the barbecue will be I.eld in (he hall, and the dance will follow. Committees are actively at. work for the event which promises to be a most successful one. Work Well Started in Some Districts Uul Weather Delavs Others.

Tomorrow is Arbor day and It will be generally celebrated by the schools throughout the county with the plant ing of trees, shrubs and Mowers. The day is also to be made the occasion of a "clean-up" of buildings and grounds and of general improvement work. Work along this line has been started several weeks ago in sour 1 districts where weather conditions were more favorable and the co-operation of the Kern county high school farm, from which many flowers and young trees were taken, has geratly assisted the leaders in the movement. In other districts where winter has not yet given way to spring the planting of trees has been postponed until Inter. Circulars suggesting plans for the day have been seal out from the county school superintendent's oftlee and reports will be made to Mr.

Bids on three widely scattered sections of the county highway system, including division 9. section 6, Bakers- lield-Glennville road; division 10, section Bakerslield-Mojave road, ami division 7, section 4, Dakerstield-Taft road, were opened by the Board of Supervisors at the beginning of the March session this morning. The bids were referred to the county highway commission for analysis and recommendation and the contracts will probably be awarded late today or tomorrow.

An odd feature of the bids on the Mojave road section showed that two bidders, George S. Benson Son and Robert Sherer Company made estimates which differed bv 10 cents only, their offers being and SSL7. respectively, while the bid of the Marin Rock Companv, the only other bidder, was $43,070.25. This contract calls for the grading and construction of bridges and culverts on six miles from the Bear Mountain ranch to the Keene school. Taft Road Bids.

Justices May Retain the Marriage Fees SACRAMENTO, March Attorney General Webb today handed down an 'opinion to Justice of the Peace. W. H. Rice, of Modesto advising him that justices may retain fees paid to them for the performance of marriage ceremonies. A recent law prohibits the retention of fees by county officers, but the attorney general holds the payment to the justices for the performance of marriage ceremonies not constitute a felony within the meaning of the law prohibiting their acceptance, it is more in the nature of a tip.
