12 The Tribune Thursday, May 5, 1988 Trial- Dukakis juggernaut clobbers Applegate Despite his poor showing, Apple-gate said he accomplished his goal of putting 18th District issues before the presidential candidates. "We're losing our industries and our jobs," the congressman said. "And the young people are seeking jobs elsewhere we are losing our population, our political base we're going to have to use all the leverage we can get for support." him out of a second delegate and an alternate. Vote totals provided by the Ohio Secretary of State and the Ohio Democratic Party in Columbus show that Dukakis racked up 44,410 votes, or 50.7 percent of the vote in the 18th Congressional District, while Apple-gate got 25,056 votes or 28.6 percent of the vote. The Rev.

Jesse Jackson polled 11,888 votes or 13.6 percent, and Rep. James Traficant, D-Youngstown, polled 2,123 votes or 2.4 percent. No other candidate received more than 1.8 percent. Applegate did win one county in the district: he squeaked by Dukakis in Harrison County, 1,355 votes to 1,144. By PAUL FURIGA Tribune Washington Bureau WASHINGTON A month ago, Rep.

Douglas Applegate, D-Steubenville, hoped he would clobber Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis in his "favorite son" presidential primary bid, sending a message that Democrats must be tough on coal and trade. Wednesday, Applegate found himself clobbered by the Dukakis juggernaut," as he termed it. His presidential bid, confined to the 18th District, produced just one delegate. Dukakis got four in the district, 115 statewide.

From his congressional office, Applegate groused that a "screwball rule" of the Democratic Party cut Together with his one Applegate said he will lobby Dukakis forces to pay attention to Ohio problems. "He's got to be president of Ohio and Massachusetts," Applegate said. The congressman described his short-lived presidential campaign as "certainly an interesting expert' ence," and he marveled at (he strength of the Dukakis A month before the primary, he said, it appeared that he might win the 18th District, making a strong statement to Dukakis. But as the Massachusetts governor won more and more primaries, and as televk sion and press coverage of him" escalated, Applegate said he knew he. could not win.

That's why he ran for president in the district, Applegate said. He said the need to bolster basic industries and stop foreign competition should be addressed by Dukakis. Applegate said he will carry those concerns to the July Democratic convention as a "super delegate" selected by Democrats in Congress. was probably 5 feet 10 or 11 inches tall. Former deputy Neal Miller testified that he took Donna Carpenter to the hospital and waited for her to be examined.

Miller said, "She refused any treatment at the hospital." The assistant prosecutor asked Miller if Donna seemed to be in any pain. He said, "No." Coshocton County Coronor Dr. Don Warren testified that he had signed the death certificate after studying the autopsy and gave the cause as gunshot wound to the abdomen with internal hemorrhaging. When court convened on Thursday morning, Manning called his last witness, Richard Scurbok, a firearms specialist from the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Richfield, to the stand. Scurbok testified that he had analyzed the gun, clothing, pellets and plastic that had been given to him by the Coshocton County sheriff deputies.

Scurbok said, "after analyzing the coveralls, I took part of the coveralls and the gun and continued to shoot until I got markings the same as was on the original material. I determined from this that the muzzle of gun was a distance of six to 12 inches from the target when fired." The defense did not question Scurbok. The shipyard strike committee issued a communique saying the strike was still on and calling on workers to come to the yard: "We continue the strike with a feeling of responsiblity for the shipyard andfor the country." In Warsaw, a national Solidarity leader was reportedly arrested.

WARSAW, Poland (AP) Plainclothes police surprised sleeping workers with percussion grenades today in a pre-dawn raid that ended a 10-day strike at a huge steel mill outside Krakow, official and church sources said. Communist authorities issued a terse dispatch saying the strike had been put down. A journalist said strike leaders were arrested. Authorities also said management ordered a lock-out at the Gdansk shipyard, site of Poland's only remaining major work stoppage. Sheriff's Auxiliary member Don Stroup took the stand and testified that he and another auxiliary member who is also an Emergency Medical Technician were the first on the scene. He said, "We parked several feet away, taking our guns out, since we didn't know what we were getting into. We asked if there were any guns in the house. We were told there were no guns, but someone had been shot. We ran into the kitchen door.

The gun was laying on the kitchen table, in a broke-down position." Stroup said there was a male subject on his back on the floor. He said the man was still alive at that time. Stroup said there were two females standing over the man, and a bloody towel was on the body. They asked if the man was all right, if he was alive. Stroup said the man was a dusty color, which meant he was not getting oxygen.

Stroup then went to the neighbor's to call the hospital. Stroup is a full-time techinican there. He said he wanted to alert the hospital to the situation and get permission to start an IV when the squad arrived. "We loaded the body in the amubu-lance, I asked for the key to the IV section, and we couldn't find it. The driver shut the engine off to give me the keys that were on that chain.

When he did that, the ambluance failed to start. We then had to transfer the body to another ambulance before transporting," Stroup testified. They continued the CPR that had been started in the residence until they arrived at the hospital. Stroup said after he arrived at the hospital he took a blood sample from Ronnie to test for alcohol. Stroup said the test showed there was no alcohol present.

Emergency room Dr. Rajendra Patel testified that he had examined Carpenter the night he was brought to the hospital. He said Carpenter was suffering from cardiac arrest and trauma, and there was no blood pressure or respiration. He said they attempted several minutes to revive the man but were unable to do so. Dr.

Robert Hastedt, pathologist from Dover, said while performing the autopsy he found pellets, some green plastic and some yellow metal. He explained the pellets came from the shell as did the green plastic. He said the yellow metal could have been from the zipper on the coveralls. Hastedt under cross examination by defense Attorney Robert Weir said that Carpenter was a large man, possibly 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing between 220 and 240 pounds. He also said the gunshot wound was approximately three quarters of an inch in diameter.
